.222 rem for coyotes

Within reasonable range, the 222 is a fine coyote rifle. Lots of guys who want a "fur friendly" round use a 222, especially when calling them in close. I've only shot coyotes with my 222 using the 50 gr Hornady SX bullets, and as long as the shots are closer than 200 yards or so, it seems to work pretty good.

222 works great for coyotes. i use remington powr lokt hp bullets. they do very little pelt damage. avoid varmint style bullets if your after fur.

The .222rem has enough punch withe the rigth bullet to kill coyotes much further than 99% of hunters can hit a coyote..... including myself. (Unless that hunter uses the internet, then said hunters effective shooting range can easilly be doubled.)

Great thanks for all the replies. Do the varmint style bullets make too much of a mess? i would have thought with the right size bullet they would kersplode inside the animal meaning no exit wound?

The Hornady 50 SX & the Sierra 50 Blitz will often not exit a coyote, especially if the shot is at a bit of angle. I have shot a lot of Coyotes with both these bullets in the triple deuce with great success and decent hides left after the shot. Regards, Eagleye.

I was honestly waiting for someone to day get rid of it and pickup a .223, ha ha. I have one, have not used it yet on a coyote but would not hesitate, if you hit the sweet spot they will be in trouble.

Im going to try to get a coyote with my 221 Fireball before spring, and it is smaller than the 222. A 50 grainer in the triple deuce seems about perfect, should work real well inside 250 yards.

Nice thing about the 223 is it can push a 55-60 grain bullet at decent speeds, and gives a bit more punch past 250 yards than the 222 can offer, although its not much more lethal than a 222, just a weeee bit

Real varmint calibers have the letters WSSM after them.:)
I'm serious.:dancingbanana:
30-06 will do the job too. It depends on what kind of job you want done.;)

Ive used a .222 for coyotes and foixesor over 20 years, and think it is the ultimate 200 yard and closer coyote cartridge.
Occasionall have shot them farther, but not too often.
TNT's exit almost never !

Is a .222 enough gun for coyotes?

Son, as far as 'yotes are concerned in a typical predator calling scenario, the .222 is GCC ("God's Chosen Caliber"). :p

Seriously, my Sako Hunter in .222 has been my go-to rifle for as long as I've been hunting coyotes (and that's more years than I care to admit). Loaded with a max charge of H335, it pushes a 40 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip to just over 3500 fps and drops ol' Wiley with authority. Pelt damage is minimal (generally no exit wound) so long as I do my part and don't clip the target around the edges. Even on the occasional "around the edges" hit, the bullet does enough damage that it still puts down the animal through shock and massive tissue damage. Knock on wood, but after all these years I have *never* lost a coyote when shooting that rifle.

That said, I certainly wouldn't fault someone for settling on a .22-250 for coyotes if they were looking for a single rifle for all their coyote hunting, particularly if you hunt coyotes as targets of opportunity rather than calling them in. If most of your shots are out past 200 yards, the .222 isn't your best choice.

I have shot uncleargile's .222, it is a Mint Sako with the Vixen action and the nicest wood I have seen on one yet! I am trying to talk him out of a .222 so he will sell it to me!
Get with the program fella's....
