.222 Rem Mag

I've been doing a little research on the .222 Remington Mag. The more I look the more I think this would be a great place to start for building a .224 target rifle. Although the cal is pretty much obsolete brass is still available at reasonable prices. Loaded to .223 pressures it has more pop and I've read that the improved version has similar performance to .22-250. I'd think a Savage Model 10 action and a match barrel with a 1 in 7"/8" twist would make a rocking target rifle. For the sake of owning something a little different I think a .222 Rem mag or a wildcat based on it would be worth doing.

I'm looking at .224 factory or wildcats such as .222 Rem Mag imp or .223 AI. A .204 doesn't have much of a bullet selection. It may be a hell of a varmint round and performs well out to 400 yds, but I'm betting a .224 80 gr A-Max is going to perform dramatically better out past 600 m than a .204 40 gr V-Max. I'm looking at .224 because it's flexable and cheap to reload. My Norma Mag is what I really want to shoot but .30 Match bullets are $35-$50 per hundred and 65-70 gr of powder per round adds up quick if you shoot often. That's the purpose of the exercise. Good long range perf and cheap to shoot.

I think you need the 5.6 x 50mm RWS, or it's rimmed counterpart.

.22BR

This uses the same amount of powder as a deuce-mag, brass is the best you can get, and this will beat the Deuce-mag and the 22-250 for inherent accuracy and pretty much equal the 22-250 for velocity.

No down side.

Nice velocity on the heavy weights. I think .22 BR might just be another to add to the maybe list.

222 Rem mag is a good cartridge. The other wildcat built on it is the original 6x47, a BR favorite for a while. - dan
