Anybody have any powder recommendations for .222 rem?

Would like to load 40gr Nolser Ballistic Tips and/or 40gr Sierra Blitzkings, and am looking for maximum velocites to extend range.

The gun is a Sako L461 Vixen.

What is the absolute best powder for max velocites in .222 rem with 40gr bullets?....Any recipes?

I would be trying IMR or H 4198 for those light pills in the 222. Should be able to use 22 grains or so, but work up from below safely. My second choice would be IMR 3031. Regards, Eagleye.

the 40gr bullets that I have shot in my 222's didn't perform all that well as far as grouping went. You may have better luck. Max velocity in the Sierra manual is 3400, with reloder 7, Win 748,BL-C2, and IMR 4198.
I have read that 3031 gives real nice groups but not the velocity you are looking for. FS

I've had good results with IMR 4198, H322 and Win 748 in 36 and 50 gr bullets. I'm in the process of trying some X-Terminator which looks to be promising.

I had my best success with WW 748 with the 222. Extremely consistant and fast.Tried tha others, and wasn't satisfied at all.
Yes, 25 grains of WW748, over a Winchester 22 hornet bullet, a 46 grain hollowpoint.
Very accurate & destructive varmint load in 222.
The varmint is not, "put into orbit" like soft nosed, spire points would, just a small, localized, lethal, volcanic eruption.

Please excuse my description. One has to see it, to believe it.

Accuracy trumps velocity every time in a varmint size cartridge. That said, two of the fastest and most accurate powders in my Sako .222 are H or IMR 4198 and Win 748.

I found that the velocity may be up in the lighter bullets ( 40-50 gr.) but i found that by using the 55gr bullet pushed by 23 gr IMR 3031 and 3100+FPS, the accuracy became very pleasing out to 200 yards.

Was this another Sako Manfred had there? I recal a Vixen with a Leupold 3-9 with a 1/4 minute dot in .222. Am I correct? Nice rifle and I think one of my old bosses owned that gun and traded it in on a shotgun. He took good care of his stuff ;) if you know what I mean.....;)

I have my best luck with Sierra 5o gr, and 4064. The only problem is case capacity. I am almost at a compressed load with the minimum load. Getting 3/4 MOA with the same rifle as yours though, out to 200.

Sierra 40 gr hp #1385 and 25.6 gr WW 748 or 24.5 gr H335 has been best out of my T3 Stainless Varmint. I also had a few nice groups with Hornadys 35 gr V-Max and 25.4 gr of Benchmark. I should do some more work with the Benchmark and H335/322 but the 748 load works so well I couldn't be bothered.

I'm a little late to the party but has anyone found anything else to use powder wise? I've got 2 pounds of 4198 to burn up, half a pound of 3031, some 4064, and some H322

Is it worth messing around with different powders for one center fire or just pick one and see what it likes weight wise?

Tried H4198,IMR 4198 ,RE#7 ,IMR 3031 + Win 748 with various bullets best was H335 with mag primers. Rem 788 custom Jury barrel 1-12 twist. Never got the 40 gr to shoot so far so am running 50gr. Will try some 60 gr Partitons on deer this year in AB as it's now legal.

IMR 8208 XBR is what I used in my Sakos for both speed and accuracy with either 40 or 50gr bullets. Was not hard to find a load that worked but most of the time it was near max.

I had excellent luck with IMR 4198 and 40 grain bullets in all my 222's over the years, and I had an L461 Vixen Varmint that loved the combo.
Me too, only mine was a Sako A1 Varmint model. IMR 4198 was tops for accuracy and velocity. At or very near max. was best. H322 was a very close second.
