222 Rem (triple deuce)... why is this cartridge slipping into obscurity?? Or, is it?

That's mine, and I take it out a few times a year, just to enjoy it. Great shooting, low recoil, more accurate than any 223 I own (and I own a few of those). They're a great rifle. - dan

I call first dibbs on that one. :)

The triple deuce is inherently accurate but getting clobbered because everyone wants cheap. I could make this a political rant but keep buying your Chicom crap and your East Bloc MilSurp..!
Wow!

The more I read about this fine cartridge, the more I want one. Sure it's 200 fps slower than 223, but so what. I appears to be a winner in terms of accuracy and certainly adequate for most varmint applications within sane distances. What is your experience and do you own one?

Same reason the Krag all but disappeared...there is a metric ####-ton of ammo, components and rifles available in 223 which is just a little bit faster.

I have four .222 riles at the present, and every time I am tempted to buy a .223 I just give my head a shake. I can't do anything with a .223 that I can't do with a .222, and I like classic cartridges as a personal preference anyway. The .222 remains in high regard in Europe because European hunters aren't influenced as much by the American military and their equipment. The Canadian marketplace is dominated by USA manufacturers, fashions, and preferences. I appreciate the European options. I'm happy with my two Sako rifles, my Anschutz and my Heym. Sold off the Remington long ago.

You are the one that I sold my L461 heavy weight to right? I miss her. How is it shooting?

Guns are like the fashion industry , they need to keep selling newer better flavor of the month , or the industry would die. I have my .223 's in composite stocks as they are easily replaceable and ride on the quad and get drug through the snow calling yotes.
The 3 triple deuces get treated with more respect , L46 sako Marlin heavy Barrel , L46 Deluxe sporter, and L46 deluxe heavy barrel , The L46 .222 rem mag just for good measure and a reminder that the .223 aint all that and a bag of chips.

The older I get the more I start to appreciate the cartridges that were already here that the modern stuff duplicates but rarely improves. Most improvements have been made in powders and barrel manufacturing not so much with cartridge design.

Gotta love the deuce !

Definitely my favorite .22 centerfire cartridge...

I own 2 of them.

A Browning A-Bolt Shot Show special & a Browning BLR.

Me and my hunting partner both have old BDL's for the gopher patch.
His is a 222 and mine is a 22-250.

His 222 is really nice to shoot but doesn't make the mist the 250 does. Nice rifle tho, I'd buy one if I saw one for sale somewhere.

Gave this SAKO to my wife about a year before we got married.

She still has it, and still shoots close to half-minute groups with it 52 years later.

I never appreciated my Dad's model 70 in .222 until I bought my cz457 varmint in .223. The only time I varmint shoot is over my Christmas holidays. This year I didn't even take my rifle outside. I can out-shoot myself with his rifle. I actually bought brass this year in .222 for the gun I don't own. I got a new .243 this year, I may leave the .223 to my AR.

While I have a .223, if I could magically make it a .222 and turn all my brass and dies into .222 offerings I'd twitch my nose and make it so!

My dad was at the Sports & Leisure show in Saskatoon this past weekend and at the gun auction he picked up a really, REALLY nice Rem. 600 Mohawk in .222. Two or three super small little dings in the stock, otherwise she's near mint. Can't wait to see him in the gopher patch with it in action! :sniper:

The 223 is cheaper to shoot and ammo is easier to get than the 222. As far as accuracy the 222 is the cal you still see winning matches. Why you ask? Look at the neck length differance. The 222 is here to stay.

I believe the Innuit used the 222 for seal hunting, long range shots and very accurate ,they had to make head shots and kill the seal before it slid back in its hole and losing it .Not sure what they use now

I recently acquired a savage 340 in 222. It is an older 'value' rifle with a barrel band so I wasn't really expecting a tack driver. With a jakt optic 4 power scope and my less than stellar shooting skills, it put two in the same hole and one half an inch high at 50 yards with factory ammo. It cycled both federal and remmington good but with ppu and s and b the bolt was sticky so I'll stick with north american ammo until I hand load for it
