.223/5.56 ammo question

.223 ammo fmj what type of core is this? Commercial ammo

5.56 IVI is this steel core? CF ammo

Reason being was shooting steel targets a while back and saw a lot of sparks with 5.56

we need make and model of the ammo in question. telling us the caliber and that it is commercially made ammo is not enough info

IVI 5.56 is typically steel core, fmj is typically soft or lead core. if in doubt cut one apart, remove it from the case before you do. they are easy to dissect

A pair of sidecutters will tell you right quick if it is steel core or not.

A steel jacket on a lead core will still spark.

IVI 5.56 ball has a two-part steel/lead core like most NATO standard ammo based on the Belgian SS109. Commercial .223 FMJ is usually lead cored only.

A magnet will tell you whether the bullets contain any steel.
