I have some military brass that I would like to load. Can I use a .223 Lee die for military 5.56 brass? Can anyone tell me the difference between the two? I tried the advanced search and came up empty.

I could be wrong since I'm a newbie also & wanting to relaod mil brass .223 but you may have to reneck with a reemer the brass. It is good brass just takes a bit of TLC thats all.

I won't be annoyed if someone corrects me on this since I'll be doing some trial & error with a few loads for my 14.5'' AR.

Use 223 dies. The military primer is crimped in palce. This crimp has to be taken off before you can re-prime the case. I touch the primer hole with a somewhat alrge electric drill to cut off the crimp.

Brass weight is about the same, so powder charges can be the same. You will need to full length size the first time.

Most likely you won't need a short base die. That'll return your brass to minimum spec, which usually isn't required.
I've ran literally thousands of rounds through about 6 different ARs where the brass was sized with (in my case a redding) 223 die, not a single problem. Up to 6x loaded with some brass.

One thing you'll likely need for military brass is a tool like dillon's super swager, to get rid of the primer crimp.
Other than that, trim your brass every time, perhaps crimp (or get a tighter neck bushing instead) and you should be gtg.
