I am looking for factual information, not opinions, on the legality of using the .223 Remington and 5.56mm cartridges for deer hunting in each province and territory in Canada. My Facebook feed is crawling with antis who are going ape dung about semi-automatics and the AR15 rifle right now. I want to counter and educate these people with facts... which I know the antis will largely ignore, bit I have to try. Here in Nova Scotia, the .223 and 5.56mm cartridges are ILLEGAL to use for deer hunting as the minimum cartridge used to hunt deer must be .23 calibre. Please let me know what province you are from and whether you are legally permitted to use either of these cartridges to hunt deer. Thank you!

Legal in BC. Gatehouse has used it for blacktail deer for sure, I think hes taken a black bear with it too.

Gatehouse used his Tavor, which is also a semi auto 556 military style rifle.

center fire for big game next door here in NB lol

Yup...For deer in NB is must be a center fire of any caliber. (or a muzzle loader). I have heard of people using nun-chucks, ninja stars, lassos, bubble gum and Tim Hortons coffee cups full of liberal tears but I am doubtful about the coffee cup.

220 Swift made a mess of a moose I shot in the US, small hole in, fist size exit. Lungs and pieces of heart were jello. Not legal in Alberta, would have no problem shooting deer with a 223 if it was legal to do so.

Here in BC is perfectly legal. Ive taken a black bear with 223 55gr NBT out of a Mini 14. Single shot through the heart. Found the expanded bullet under the hide on the far side. Would not hesitate to use it on deer.

I thought the Ont. regs state not lower than. 243 cal??? But it's been awhile since I have read that portion. I'm always hunting in shotgun only or bow these days.

As far as I know regs only state, Centre Fire - Yes, Rimfire _ No Some areas state not larger than 270 cal for small game though..... Always has been tough to understand some of the regs though.

Legal to use any center fire in MB for big game. I would not personally use a 223 for elk or moose but have done so very successfully for deer.

This is correct. .223 is perfectly legal in Ontario for deer in every respect in every area that has a rifle season for them.
