223 53gr VMAX vs 68grBTHP OAL

Hi guys, yet another post on 223 lol.

I've started reloading the 223 with the 53 gr vmax and now I'm trying the 68gr BTHP.

While measuring my max OAL, I seem to have noticed that the 68 gr would have a OAL shorter than the 53gr. That seems to be confirmed by my hornady manual, so I guess the ogive of the 68 is more forward that the one of the 53. However, seems strange that the 68, having a higher BC, would have an ogive more forward. Otherwize I checked on the internet and people say they sit that bullet at very long OAL, ie 2.400 but I measured my max OAL at 2.29.

Any input on this ? Is it normal that the 68 OAL would be a tad shorter than the 53gr OAL ?

Depends on what gun you are reloading for. An AR oal is dictated by what will fit in the magazine (I believe that is about 2.250, but I'm not at home so can't check). On bolt guns people play with the lengths sometimes to give minimal bullet jump to the lands which some bullets prefer and you get tighter groups

Bolt gun, and that's what I'm trying to do, play with the lenght I just want to verify that it's normal that whith both bullets touching the lands, the 53gr has the longest OAL

My 223 Tactical likes 2.255 for the 68 grain.

just touching lands...I use 24.5 grains of Varget..3/4 MOA consistent..1/2 MOA if IM having a good day

i believe mine is loaded out to 2.232 in my bolt gun, shoots tight.

A lot depends on the shape of the projectile. some are stubby and others are long and thin. so OAL will vary with each type.

My oal with those is 2.385 and 25.5gr of varget with win brass.

Max oal is depicted by your gun. You should know this by now. Oh wait I forgot who I am talking to. Maybe time for you to do more reading and less posting. If you dont know what you are talking about stfu already.
