So I’ve just started reloading Hornady ELDM’s in 223 and noticed my seating die is screwing up the bullets; you can see a depression from the seating stem on the ogive.
So I guess I need some competition dies (got the same bullets for my 6.5x55 so probably need new dies for that to).
What are the preferred dies for these bullets?
And who would have them in Canada?
Thanks

What kind of dies are you currently using?

I had that issue with Hornady dies and had to order a different seating stem. You will have to research to see if you can purchase a different stem.

My Dillon seating die for .223, using Hornady 80gr ELDM, putting a major compression on Varget powder, puts a squeeze ring on the bullet. So I am also interested in the solution. Though I think perhaps the best solution is to ditch Varget and go H4895.

Yeah I’m not sure about seating stem for Lee dies. Other members more familiar Lee products may have to chime in.If not you might need to get different dies.

Does it leave a ring on an empty case? I don’t think 24gr Varget is compressed but it’s probably close. I have no issues with 68gr BTHP and 24.5gr Varget but I’ve never tried ELDM either.

I’ll be upgrading my dies, Lee doesn’t offer an optional seat insert that I can see.
So far the Hornady seem like a sure thing (they make the bullet and dies with a specific seat for this bullet) but I never hear of anybody using them so I was hoping someone would chime in on the popular option.
No, the brass is fine, it’s the bullet which gets ringed.

I was asking if you still get a ring on the bullet when seating on an empty case.

I had to buy the Eld seating stem for 308 but not for 7mm08. RCBS dies also did not require a different seating stem for ELDX bullets in 308. It’s hard to say if it will work until you try it.

I wouldn't think you're close to compressing the powder , I've loaded heavier and didn't have any crunch factor but a lot depends on the length you're loading at . The good thing about Lee's floating seating stems are , if you have access to a lathe or know any one that does , the seating stems can be custom made in a few minutes .

I use Hornady seaters for a few cals, some are accuracy rifles, they perform very well.
The cats ass are Forster seating dies, I don't bother with the micrometer ones, just the cheaper ones. Great design.

I just got hornady match grade bushing dies for my 6 creedmoor and my oh my are they ever nice. Bushing die and micrometer seater for 140 dollars cant really go wrong. And they make some damn straight ammo.

I couldn’t find all the Hornady bits available online in Canada and the phone was busy at the place I called.
By the time I got through I had already “added to cart” and “checked out” the Forster dies from elsewhere (the guy still made a sale on other stuff).

There was some talk about this on here a while back and some guys said that you can sand/grind it down some to match the angle of the bullets.

Same thing happens with my 80 EMDs and Forster micro. Its not really dented but there is a slight mark on the bullets.

Well I’m not waiting a week to see if the Forster’s work...
All the Hornady stuff is coming too, they made the bullet and specific stems for them so what the hell, it’s only money...
