223 Ackley

adequate with a penetrating bullet like TSX or Partition, however if you have a 243 or bigger, it is somewhat of a stunt to use a 22 caliber. Ive shot a deer with smaller and it worked excellent

this is the exit hole of the 45gr Triple Shock X

Sorry bedrock :)
Trying to figure if my interest in a varmint/deer rifle will be realistic
I am partial to the AI 223
Just curious on everyone's input
Thanks

I've got a 223AI and would absolutely hunt deer with it; in fact have the load worked up with the 53TSX at 3550 fps.

But it wouldn't be my first choice on a 300 pound mature buck. I would punch a shoulder and not think twice, but wouldn't be comfortable pumping one up the chute on a going away animal.

That said, I haven't done it yet so this is just conjecture.

Don't missunderstand me Tree, I'm all in favour of hunting with a 22 centrefire but there's a ton of people on here that feel differently. I've owned at least a half dozen
22.250's, killed a few bears with them and I know a guy that's hunted moose and elk for many years with a 22.250 but he's a hell of a hunter and an excellent shot. I now have a couple 22br's, one for paper and the other for varmits and I doubt I'll ever go back to a 250. I also believe in the hydraulic effect of lighter bullets at high velocity and the killing power. I've used 52 to 55 gr Sierra Game Kings for many years and would never change but I have a friend that's used Barnes on a lot of wolves and he swears by them.

Not legal for big game in many places, why would you use one anyways, when there are far better choices everywhere you look. It's a gopher gun not suitable for military use or big game hunting.

It's a freaking stunt and anyone that does it is a major j*ck*ss...

Ahhh haaa haaa had to say that... :p

Yes it would work and yes I have done it many times...

:D

I have made almost identical shots on eater sized bucks at 40-100yrds w/ 120 TSX out of a 7mm08, and 62 tsx from my .223AI. Both shots were quartering toward me, and impact was the point of the shoulder. Both shots resulted in broken onside shouolders, destroyed inards, and complete penetration. This is performance I can live with.:p I've always wanted a 1-8" .22-250 AI, but it's hard to justify now that I've got a 1-8" .223 AI.

Always wanting is justification enough......that and 50gr. at 4kfps  (or heavier with an 8" twist)

I actually have a 1-14" .22-250 AI, and 50 vmax at 4000 are a hoot, but, I'm more intereseted in 75 amax at 3300, or 90 Berger at 3100-ish. The .223AI is pushing the 75 amax at 3050 w/ 26gr H335. Half the appeal is how well '335 meters. Should be pretty easy on the barrel compared to the 38gr + in the 22-250 AI...

Certainly opens up the long range possibility doesnt it.

Im also keeping my eyes open for 8 twist 223 take off to get installed rechambered as opposed to get the 14" twist rechambered I have now.

I have an older 1 - 14" twist 26" barreled Ruger tang safety in 22-250 that I have been thinking about improving or rechambering to 22-243 just can't decide what I want to do.

If I improve it I can use my loads that I already have to fire form the cases but the capacity of a 243 case is something to drool over....

What to do...

Then I have an RA XCR-L in 223 can this be improved obviously I can't have the barrel turned in that is normally required?
