Got hold of a quite unusual twist rate barrel blank in 223 (1:5) and I was thinking about building a 223 AI chambered rifle with it. Anybody shooting that caliber? My blank is 25'' with an od of 2'', quite somme material to make a barrel! I would like to make it an F-Class type of rifle to shoot prone and on a bench at 300 yards and more. Action will probably be a rem 700 SA from an SPS.

Is there anybody shooting 223 AI with heavy 90gr bullets? Your input would be appreciated.

Wow, that twist is bizarre. The 90gr VLD's don't need anymore then a 7 twist and have been shot with 8 twists.

Remember that a 223 AI goes into F open and you will be playing with the big boys.

Keep it 223 and stay in F TR. Not sure how much speed you will get with this combo but the goal is 2800fps or more.

The barrel was custom made around 10 years ago. There is no manufacturer's ID on it, the only inscriptions are the following: 224/219, 6 , 5 which means 22 cal, 6 grooves and 1 turn in 5 inches twist. When I read these inscription I did not believe in 1 in 5, so I measured it. I salvaged it from being scrap since it wasn't corresponding to any standard twists.

Thank you Jerry for your input, I'll keep it in standard 223, it'll also save me from purchasing a set of reamers and headspace gauges.

Subsonic would be a fun thing but to me under 30cal, it's of no practical use.

Cummins4x4, thanks for the link.
