I am currently using winchester 45 grain JHP in my stevens .223 rifle. My question is: what are some other good brands/types (preferably with a higher grain) that you have shot. Targets and varmints.
for sure go with what SuperCub said and save your brass for the day you get into handloading. You can make 223 ammo for about $5 a box of 20 (55 gr. Hornady SP's over milsurp powder - both from Higginsons). The only 223 factory stuff that I've used is the white box Winchester 45 gr. JHP load and the 55 gr. FMJ load. Oh, and one box of 55 gr. Federal soft points.
As for factory ammo, I'd bet that the more pricier stuff like Winchester Supreme w/ Ballistic Silvertips would shoot pretty good and perform well on varmints.
I've tried several federal soft point loads in heavier weights and winchester superx powerpoints in 64 grain with accurate results. The only load I've found inconsistent was american eagle. For paper I picked up 500 UMC FMJ and have been happy with them.

I like the remington UMC 45gr HP for my tikka. The brass is nicer than the white box. I can get the UMC a bit cheaper than the wwhite box too. Accuracy wise: I just shoot gophers and pop cans up to 100 yards and haven't been able to notice a differnce.
The only way to know what your rifle likes is to buy a few different types and try them out. Once you find what you like buy a bunch of the same lot if possible. option #2 reload.
I load a 64 grain power point for a colleague and his Steven. He loves the load for coyotes and I am sure it would work for deer in a province where it is legal.
