Hi,

I recently bought a large quantity of loose .223 FMJ ammo in zip-lock bags. By the looks of the headstamp, id say its suplus. There is probably atleast 3 different headstamps in this large lot.

Theres ones that have the letters "L" and "C", with two digits ( I assume it would be the date)

Theres ones that have the letters "C" and "J", with two digits ( I assume it would be the date)

Theres ones that have the letters "T" and "W", with two digits ( I assume it would be the date). A couple of these "TW" headstamped ones appear to have soft points.

If anyone has any ideas about what kind of surplus this is, please let me know.

C J - China North Industries Corp / Norinco
T W- Twin Cities Ordnance Plant, Minneapolis, MN

Is any of this stuff any good? I havent decided on a .223 gun yet. Cant decided between a semi-auto (Mini-14, AR-15, Ar-180B) or a scoped rifle like a Remington 700.

Thanks to all who helped me ID this stuff.

TW is Twin Cities Ordnance Plant. Also U.S. SP's are likely reloads. You should pull those. Shooting other people's reloads isn't a good idea.
CJ is China North Industries Corp., (NORINCO). Not milsurp.
The numbers usually are the year of manufacture, but the Chinese use the number of the factory.

How can I tell if they are reloads or not, beisdes if they have soft points? Some have silver primers and some have gold primers. I know when me and my friend reload 9mm, the winchester primers we use are gold. Does that mean all the cases primed with gold coloured primers are reloads?

Maybe....i mean no!

Great. I have 1000 rounds of .223 that some may or may not be reloaded and could blow up my 1600$ AR in my face. Just great

I went through all the ammo today and sorted it according to who made it.

I have approximately:
610 lake city
170 Norincos
200 Twin City
20 misc. rounds, including TW sp's, Remigntons and federals.

I came across 2 new headstamps that I also have no idea about.

There was two rounds with " WCC" on the headstamp, with a date
There was three rounds with "WRA" on the headstamp, with a date

if anyone can help me out, id appreciate it.

It seems as though all the gold primers I was worried about are only on the Norincos, so Id assume they probably arent relaods.

WCC is Western Cartridge Co. Bought out by Winchester long ago.
WRA is Winchester Repeating Arms.
Twin Cities Ordnance Plant made ammo for the U.S. military exclusively. No SP's from there.
"...primed with gold coloured primers are reloads?..." No. All the primers I've ever used are silver in colour.

The soft points in the Twin Cities cases must be reloads then. The gold primers are only on the norincos, so they arent reloads. The winchester primers I use for reloading are gold in colour, so I wasnt sure if the gold primed ones were reloads, but unlikely since all the Norincos are gold primed.

Winchester primers have been brass colored for the last 4 years at least.
