Purchased a case of 223 so help me decide which bolt gun to get for under $1200
I've been looking at CZ and Remington 700

use will be Paper and varmint control

oh bullet weight too my bad American Eagle 55g FMJ

New to this, I'm also building an AR so worst case it'll go through that platform.

The weight and bullet design are pretty important to make such suggestions.

If all you want is a bang, its hard to beat a savage for the price.

Tikka T3x Hunter in 223 is an option in your price range. 1:8 twist barrel. Depending on bullet weight, might be worth a peak.

Yeah, what ammo did you buy?

I love my Ruger American Ranch for paper punching, steel, varmint control and hunting in general. But the 1:9 twist won't shoot 55 grain for ####, so i load up with 62 grain ball for practice and plinking and heavier stuff for hunting.

Bulk 55gr FMJ is not designed as target ammo. 1:12 or 1:14 twist is best for this weight but bulk ammo may not give the most consistent results, although you may get lucky with a particular rifle.

I would run the bulk stuff through your AR and develop a handload for your vermint gun.

May I suggest a Savage Model 11 "hog hunter" in .223
Check with some CGN sponsors as they may have them in stock...I see Cabelas.ca has them for $569
I have one that I use for targets and coyotes
Comes with a heavy 20" barrel and accutrigger.
Its a 1:9 twist rate which IMO is the best all round twist for 223. It will shoot 55g up to 69g bullets accurately but leans toward the heavier side of that range.
It also comes with factory iron sights but I removed the sights and added a rail and scope.
The stock is just cheap plastic so toss it and get an aftermarket. I bought a Boyds thumbhole but there are others, or try an an MDT chassis and still be under or pretty close to your budget of $1200.

Good advice here -my T3x shines with 40-50g bullets (1-8 twist)

While I agree that the ammo selected isn’t conducive to accuracy, I will say that my Savage 10T-SR shoots the stuff at around 1.2moa. I shoot hornadys frontier match 69 grain at .5-.7 moa too. My SLR with Norinco pencil barrel will also shoot ~1.5 moa using that ammo.

A lot of people put down the Savage Axis 1-2 in .223, and the Savage Axis line in general. However, as the owner of 3 in .223 and .308, I can say with out a doubt it is the best budget shooter out of the box. My Axis 1, in .223 is my go to coyote gun and gets lots of use. The cons, the mag well and fit of magazine is annoying, but I have never had one fall off or fail to feed. The bolt action has a couple of spots of drag, the trigger group and trigger action is like hauling a 2X4 down a gravel road (but I know each bump before it fires), compared to my 700 Police special heavy barrel (308), and the Savage Axis 2 in .223 (plus the trigger weight is adjustable).

All that being said, for less then $500, It rides in sled behind ski doo, it is carried thru bush in snow, rain, sleet and hail, it is my outdoor field gun, it is my go to coyote killer gun, the supplied Bushnell 3 X 9 X 40 has never failed.

IF the goal is to blast rounds and shoot coyotes, save your money, by one in .308 for your $1200 bucks. Two for one.

IF your goal is long range (.223?) paper puncher go with a better quality rifle that don't have the nuisances of Axis 1-2, but it can shoot. I only custom load for all my rifles so ammo consistencies is not an issue for me.

I have the exact same rifle as mentioned here for sale and it shoots 50-55 gr very well.....mind you I’m reloading quality varmint and match projectiles.
The 55 gr Federal FMJ will be fine for 100 yard shooting and should hold 1- 1.5 MOA, just try it and keep your expectations realistic. This type of ammo will also show more inconsistencies so again keep it in check. It’s good ‘clean’ ammo so it’s better than putting some of the other junk surplus ammo down a decent rifle.
As far as a rifle....pick your poison, most decent varmint/target models will shoot and take the heat from high round count sessions!

I have a Remington 700 VSF 223 Rem that shoots cheap fmj pretty well but that in my experience is rare for cheap 223 ammo.

This rifle is well priced and well suited.

AE is one of the worst 223 ammo i have ever shot. At least in the rifles i have tried. Maybe you will have better luck.

Tikka is nice. Try a cz 527 carbine in 223. What a fun blaster and accurate too. Put a peep sight on it and you’ll be having a bit of a blaaaast. Very light and handy
