.223 and .224 question???

BTW, groove diameter is the bullet diameter for jacketed bullets. A 308 Win has a groove diameter of 308 and uses 308 diameter bullets.

Early Hornets used .223 groove barrels (like my old Brno) so shot better with 223 bullets.

But 222Rem, 220 Swift, 219 Zipper and 225Win was always 224. Confusing, isn't it?

A lot of cartridges are named by their bore diameter, and others by their groove diameter. Some don't even come close (.38 Special is .357). And many are named for several other reasons. Like the year they were made (30-06), or the grains of black powder (30-30). Some should be slugged to check the true groove diameter as is the case with many older military guns (like ones chambered for the 7.62x54R). Confusing to many newbies.

I believe the 38sp was initially based on a lengthened 38short colt, which used a Heeled bullet of just under .380... hence the 38 moniker
