.223 and Gophers

Ummm, I think anything over 45 grain will pierce the tough hide on the gopher :) Same rules as the range...larger bullet is more stable at longer distance. Have you considered just a .22 rimfire? Helluva lot cheaper all in all.

Shooting gophers at 200-300 yards with a .22cal is a waste of time. I have a Sako Quad for use on gophers at closer ranges.

No I have to disagree with all of you, sorry.
The very BEST gopher bullet to use since we're in the reloading section are the Barnes varmint grenades. Google that one and see the results. They are called grenades for reasons.
My buddy had some out at the end of last season in his .223 and I have never seen anything like it. They absolutely exploded when hit at any distance-- it was fantastic.

Thanks for the heads up. I have just ordered a box of 50gr. They do look NASTY!

I tried a box of the Varmintors (predecessor to the Grenade) and was not impressed and the Varmintor's were told to be more explosive than the Grenades.

I had better (and higher) hits with the V-Max. YMMV

I used both the v-max and the varmint grenade last year. I like them both. Both make those little critters a fine red mist. Which ever of these you decide to use you will like. I was using hornady hollow points before but they did not have the reaction the v-max and grenade have. I don't remember my recipe off hand but they were 50 grn v-max and the light 36 grn grenades. Unbelievable what they do when they hit. They are just as accurate as anything else. I use a Remington 700p .223

I was pushing some Sierra 52gr hpbt with 27hr of H-335 at 3050fps with a Savage. These were that guns favorite load!!!!!!! Pounded many of gophers with them. Picked em up 4ft consistantly. Good for critter control and a good laugh.
