I've used my video cam with a 400x zoom. It's an older high8 model. Battery lasts for approx 3-4 hours. I can see holes out to 600m if the wind doesn't blow the cam/tripod all over the place. You can pick up a decent high8 cam for less than $150 used. Charge the battery/ies the night before.
