keltecs also have a good track record of having their buffer tube disintegrating out into a bazillion pieces during cycling, or at least the Sub2k did.
They are decent firearms for range/hobby use but definitely on the budget side, and not something I would rely on, personally
They are what they are and some of their models are better then others, SU16's have been around for what a decade or so, and have had some revisions addressing problems maybe 4 or 5 years ago, not sure as I haven't looked into them too hard.
Not many 5 poundish folding .223 ar mag fed semi's out there for $800
Since I'm looking at 223 max range at like 200 yards. 100 yards is what I'm looking at. Just a basic a little bit more power than 22lr. This is the caliber I was looking at. I checked out the 9mm backpack ones and I will probably get one of those also just to see what the comparison is hands on. Not using it for say bear defense since I got a short barrel 12 ga. And I'll probably pick up a 44 mag or 357 lever I think for that.
Just like the 223 round personally.(I have considered 22mag also).
223 has a max effective range of 600m (ammo dependent) and again effective range depends on what you are using it for which you still haven´t told us other than you like the calibre and want to put it in a bag.
Get an X-95, it´ll cover most needs inside of 300m and if you don´t like it the resale value is good and they sell quickly.
There are folding options when you use aftermarket chassis with RAR.
This is my current set up for my 223 RAR but it is a bit heavy and bulky like this for a pack rifle. I'd like a folding or telescoping stock that was as light as the factory stock for packing.

What rifles are you referring to that have this capability? Henry makes a break-action single shot in 223 but I wouldn't call that "folding".
You can drop a Ruger American into an MDT LSS or LSS-XL and put a folder on it.
If you have an AR-15 sitting, rusting in the safe, you could try a conversion kit to make it a straight-pull bolt action.
This is not what the AR was designed to do, but it gets the parts outside.
I converted a Norinco M4 clone with a Spectre Ballistics kit and my neighbour converted his Smith & Wesson M&P with a Maple Ridge Armoury Renegade kit.
They aren't semi autos but cycle fast and well and the MRA version has the benefit of a spring return. Both worked well with no problems.
Again, not a semi-auto but light and can take down for back-packing.
