I'm going to put together a Remington 700, with their varmint contoured barrel, .223 in an A5. What barrel length would you recommend for balance, velocity, and noise?

I went with a 26" heavy bench contour on my A-5 223 project....Looks about right to me!

The rifle in the pic has a 22" L-W. I get 2950 w/ a naked 75 amax and either Varget or R15. I don't think I'd go longer than 24" on a .223 unless it was never going to be carried further than from the truck to the bench.

Burning at a max 30 grains of powder, I can't see needing more than 22" of barrel. But something a wee bit longer may balance better.

My A5 shipped three days ago. When it gets here I'm going to dump a factory varmint weight 223 with 24" factory tube in it for a few days before I send it and the PacNor medium Palma 22 cal tube along to Leeper. My gut tells me the final product will have a 23" tube.

I have a laminated Sako A1 with a 22 7/16 sporter weight barrel. The gun probably weighs about 7 lbs before scope, wicked accurate, easy to shoot and carry.
