.223 bolt gun questions

Hi guys, I'm on a list for some new non-restricted semi-auto builds in .223. I'm wondering what you would recommend as a bolt gun for fairly accurate shooting. Seems how im buying ammo in bulk anyway. A budget of 1000 before the scope. I'm fairly new to shooting and this forum is amazing for info.

I have a Remington 700 .223 with the heavy barrel. I put it in a Magpul Hunter stock. It's a great rifle that is more accurate than I am. Well under one inch @ 100 yds with my reloads.

Great shooter for not a lot of money.
 
Savage Model 12 is also a good choice. More upgrade parts are available for the Remington but the Savage can be an excellent shooter out of the box.
 
Some People like to bash Savage every chance they get - even when they are getting outshot by one!:p
firca relatively inexpensive rifle they just plain shoot great, period!

I picked up a low round count and like new Remington 700 LTR off of the EE for $1100. HS Precision Kevlar stock, 20" fluted barrel, I couldn't be happier. Good deals can be found on very slightly used rifles.
 
Bought a Savage 116 (stainless) with a scope for well under $1000 and I'm very happy with it's accuracy. Leaves some money for all the ammo you're going to shoot, and you'll shoot plenty.
Tons of fun.
 
+1 for a used 700 in .223. for that money you should be able to find something in an aluminum bedded stock too.
My SPS varmint ran under $800 new and I picked up a used HS precision stock for around $300. My only complaint about my 700 is I wish I had detachable magazines instead of the hinged floorplate. There are options both OE and aftermatket that, as i have recently learned, range greatly in cost and quality. I'm waiting for my "cheap" mag conversion to arrive right now (under $200)

With almost no experience shooting compared to others around here, I will say that by the time i finished sighting in my 700 i was shooting through the same hole @50m fwiw. Lots of cheaper options too, but 700s rock.

Ruger American Ranch in 5.56/.223 with Boyd's stock. Very accurate and fun to shoot.
Barrel twist rate lets you shoot anything from light to heavy projectiles. Many of the others suggested have twist rates meant only for light to medium projectiles. Heavier are better for longer ranges.

No way man! No roast! The American is awesome too, for what it is. It does have a bad rep, but it has its charm. the stock is even aluminum bedded and "free floated" although it has quite a bit of flex. Not much aftermarket though.

For half the price of a 700 it would do just fine. I dont think I would pay what I paid for a new one (about $600...i was new lol), but a used one might be worth a shot.

I had a standard in .308, and it was cool. I would have loved a boyds stock for mine!
 
I am super happy with my Savage Axis II. 223 with wood grain and a decent Weaver Kaspa piece of glass. Shooting off a crappy plastic table I hit 1.25 MOA all day, and quite often put em all within an inch. MOA at the range off a nice bench with proper rests. Got out the door at around $600 bones.


The day I took it home. :)

Can confirm, R700 .223 heavy barrels are excellent shooters. Easily sub-MOA and though I haven't cracked 3/4 MOA consistently enough to make the claim, on a few occasions I've put 4 or 5 rounds in the same hole at 100m.

You will need to look for one with an aftermarket stock c/w aluminum bedding block. While the Hogue stocks do have pillars, the fore-end flex will decrease accuracy. This is especially noticeable if you try to put one of the 26" models into a Hogue stock.

I think you will be happy going this route. I went with the magazine well also so I could do away with the Remington internal magazine. For magazines I ordered a couple of MDT's 5.56 polymer mags. Here is my rig.
