what are you using for bullets? im thinking of just going back to FMJ, ive been tinkering with GMX and some other HP's from both Sierra and Hornady.
Do you stick to a bullet and master it or are you like me flopping back n forth trying to decide?
I haven't shot Amax yet, as I heard they aren't the best with coyote, so it seems like a accuracy bullet only. or is that not true?

What you're shooting will make a difference. Semi auto, bolt, twist rate, etc. My favourites in a 1:9 twist bolt are 55gr Blitzkings for coyotes, 55gr. Nosler BT for 100 yd paper, and 70gr. Berger VLD for plinking 200yd+.

Correct, Amax is a high BC match bullet. Some will say othrrwise, but match bullets should not be used for animals. They do not offer reliable critter getting capabilities.

maybe im thinking out loud...
thinking of practicing with the 55gr FMJ, then switching over to the GMX for hunting. Hornady says its made for medium size game, but I don't want to start the debate on .223 being enough for a deer or not. But the GMX is just too expensive to shoot all year round.

I use mostly 53gr vmax. I do shoot alot of whatever 40gr hp I see on hand to load up. For the 40's they all seem to shoot great with a full case of varget lol

Hornady 55gr FMJ with cannelure for plinking $600/6,000
Nosler or Sierra BTHP 69gr or 77gr for precision work out of my Noveske 1-7" twist 14.5" Afghan or Stag 3G 1-8" twist 18"

I built a target AR using a SS 24" bull barrel with a 1:10 twist. Probably should have gone to a 1:8 but the furthest I would be shooting it is 200 yards and at that distance the lighter bullets used in slower twist rifles work fine. I've been shooting the 52 gr. Sierra MKs and 52 gr. Hornady AMAXs. My best group with the SMKs was .28" (5 shots) but the Hornadys consistently group under 1/2" all day long so I don't think you can go wrong with either one.

Of course they're quite a bit more $$ than generic FMJs but luckily I stocked up before the panic set in so I'm set for a while.

I just bought my first .223 and it has a 1 in 12 rate of twist (it's an H&R Ultra Hunter, so it's is a single shot, therefore, I'm not considering cheap, bulk ammo, as I won't shoot a huge amount of ammo when I do go the range). I'll practice with Remington UMC 55gr MC (FMJ), and Winchester USA (white box) 45 gr JHP. For coyotes, I've purchased Hornady 55 gr VMAX and Hornady Superformance 53 gr VMAX. I need lots of practice to rebuild my shooting skills, as I've been away from guns for quite a few years, due to a stint in archery and bow hunting. All the best hoochie:)

So many good bullets to choose, many with excellent reputations. Perhaps just choose one that is designed for your purpose, is appropriate for your twist rate, and appeals to you, then play around with it. Nosler Ballistic tips, Hornady V-max, Sierra Blitzkings, Berger match, fmjs, etc.

I gotta give some love to the Speer 55 gr soft point for general use, cheap enough for plinking, rapid-expansion for varmints, relatively easy on pelts, and plenty accurate for target.
