Looking for advice on what kind of chamber. I’m going with 1-8” twist. I wanna be able to shoot bulk 55 grain ammo decent accuracy as well as other loads using 50 grain up to possibly 75 grain ammo. New to this stuff so need experienced peopole to chime in

I would go with a Wylde chamber. It's widely used for shooting the heavier bullets. It works well with the lighter bullets too. I've used this chambering on several precision rifles and it works for me.

Ya? I was leaning on the side of the Wylde chamber as well. I wanna be able
To shoot accurately with lighter bullets and occasionally try out some 69’s or even 75’s or 77’s but where I live longer ranges are not easy to come by so varmint type bullets will be most popular I’m sure

I have a Tikka T3x in .223 at 1:8 twist. Bulk 55 grain, the best I could ever get was 1.5 ~ 2 moa. Im still in the process of finding what the Tikka likes, also not reloading yet, but with Hornady Match 75 grains, I can get 1/2 moa consistently if I do my part.

I have a tikka light 223 1-8”. Mine shoots alright with bulk ammo but prob not 1/2 moa. A lot of people are saying their custom 1-8” twist shoot the lighter bullets with very good groups but if that weren’t possible I’d have to go with a 1-10” or 1-9”

What is the max length your magazine will handle?
In some cases you may need to single feed a long bullet like the 75gr amax, depending on how long your throat is.
Those are a couple measurements for you to take. And then see how the bullet will sit in the case at the smallest measurement.
Ideally, with the heavies, you will need a throat/mag that will accommodate 2.4-2.5" oal which is well above how most 223 Rem factory guns are set up. 2.3" ish....

I have a Wylde chambered 7.7t Krieger - it shoots the 55-90gr very well

You guys with T3's - had 2, both didn't like factory fodder - but, if you reload, i suggest you try 25.2gr +/- 0.5gr Varget, 69gr SMK, go shoot wee bitty groups to 400 yds. It would shoot 1/2"-3/4" 200yd groups more often than not.

Nice. Guy who is doing my bighorn tl3 223 build is looking for a quality barrel for me. Benchmark barrel is what I think I’ll go with from
Bighorn sales

Wylde throat is only .060 FB
We run the .100 FB on stuff and results are awesome. Much better then the wylde throated reamer. 55 to 90 gr run sub .250 on 7 rds typically

Chat with Dennis on this... I would suggest the standard 223 Rem chamber if planning to stay in the lighter bullet weight range.

A long throat can help if you want to max case volume by seating long heavy bullet way out.. and that type of set up is best single loaded.

what type of OAL are you going to use and what type of mag? If you are planning to run standard bulk 223 ammo that is set up for an AR15 mag, go with a shorter throat.

Also, an overly long throat will reduce the accurate life of that barrel if running short light bullets... that is essentially what a worn out barrel is.

With any build, you are trying to balance ALL the factors and a throat length is just one of many points to consider.

YMMV.

FYI, I am running Hrn 75gr BTHP in a SAAMI spec 223 Rem chambered Shilen prefit, 8 twist over a moderate charge for practise... groups are in the 5/8" to 3/4" range at 200yds which I feel is plenty good given that I am not optimising my powder type or charge (ball powder thrown from a powder measure)

I wanna use aics magazines. I like single loading but then I should have bought a single shot action. I’m not sure on oal but if your able to load up to 75 grainers in a standard 223 chamber then I really would not need the longer throat of the Wylde. I do wanna shoot quite a bit of bulk ammo as practice ammo and also 50-60 grain v max for gophers.

Jerry, would you recommend Prefit barrel over a standard barrel installation? One plus side would be that in the future I could buy the barrel vise and wrench or change barrels on my own.

All my ammo is currently fed out of MDT polymer 223 mags. Simple, and works.

Prefit vs standard install is really a personal preference ... depending on the action you are using. those with floating bolt heads do very well with prefits. Some solid bolt actions may not if they have truing issues.

But there is now a huge range of actions where prefits are possible... including Savage, Rem, Ruger, Howa, Marlin and Tikka....

When set up properly, accuracy with either style of install is the same.

Eenie meenie...

My AICS magazines will accept a longer round than, say an AR magazine.
The Wylde chamber allows both 5.56 ball and SAAMI .223 ammunition to be used.

I ordered a new bighorn tl3 action so pre fits would work well. Not sure yet if I wanna go with a chassis or stock. Krg bravo and greyboe look like decent options
