Real simple:
Are 69gr SMK's gonna work, or am I better off with some 55gr flat base hollow points?
I like the better wind bucking of the SMK's but didn't know if they would have the same uhhh..... 'terminal effect'?
Yotes are easy to kill.
Match bullets are easier on hides, but they are worth so little right now you might just as well "blow them up" with what ever works well in your gun.
I really like the Nosler BST 40g varmint bullet out of a .223. They usually drop them where they stand with no exit hole; if you hit them right below/behind the shoulder.
I exclusively use 69 grain match bullets for everything from gophers to coyotes. They drop yotes very well and buck the wind much better than the lighter bullets. The heavier weight hits them harder at longer range as they retain much more energy and last but not least, you cannot beat the accuracy.
224 / 5.56mm
1:16 up to 55 grains, 4300 fps or more
1:15 up to 55 grains, 4100 – 4300 fps
1:14 up to 55 grains, less than 4100 fps
1:12 55 – 63 grains
1:9 63 – 70 grains
1:8 70 grains or more
For coyotes, 45gr HP's work well in my .223 and there's also some 40gr HP's on the shelf waiting for their turn. IMHO, 55gr and up bullets require a bigger case such as a .22-250 to push the larger slugs.
Does anyone remember Remingtons .22 accelerators. It was a 22 bullet ina sabot in either a 30-06, 308 or 30-30? case. Maybe this question, Is anyone here old enough to remember these.
I found that 62 grain bullets as long as they are crimped, to be one of the best so far. For accuracy when punching paper, the 69 gr. Sierras work great in my Savage 1 in 9 twist. Even a crimped 55 grain fmj will go thru yotes with minimal damage to the pelt. Puts them down too.
75 Grain A-Max in front of 25 grains of Varget out of my 1-9" Savage. Good accuracy and dead yotes. Two shots, two dogs, two complete pass-throughs. Pencil hole in and out.
