I know there is alot of knowledge on this sight. I am getting the bug to get a heavy barrel rifle in .223. Rifles I am considering are the Savage 12 LRPV or VLP and there may be another of there's. Cooper is another consideration as well as Sako but these are more money. Tika's are also on my list.
I don't know much about barrel twist and some of these guns you have a choise ie: Savage 7 or 9.
What would be your brand choice in order and what model if more than one and what twist rate would work best? Stocks I like laminated wood but would consider a good composite stock. Scopes I was thinking something in the 6-20ish. Range. Hope you guys can make my choise easier.

All the manufacturer's you mentioned make good guns. I own and have owned a few on your list.

I owned a Savage VLP but sold it to my cousin. Great gun. Nice heavy barrel, laminate stock and a good factory trigger. DBM on it is a joy to have hunting varmints. Barel was 9 twist. Shot 50gr bullets no problem and some 75 grainers depending on temp/pressure. The A-Max are right on the line with a 9 twist and can be shot in the summer for sure but not always in the winter.

I will also mention my REM700 223. Older BDL. Trigger is suitable but not Acc-utrigger light by any means. 12 twist barrel drives lighter bullets (up to 60-65 gr max) into small bug holes. Proven gun that kills coyotes dead! Nice thing abou tthe 700 series is there are more upgrades for that gun than any other gun on the planet. If you can dream it, chances are, it's out there for that gun.

Tikka. I currently have a .223 with an 8 tiwst barrel. It does well with 50 grain NOSLER ballistc tips. Shoots everything up to and including some 80gr bullets. A nice versatile barrel that allows me to hunt with light bullets and do some long range plinking with the VLDs. Trigger is a thing of beauty for a factory rig and the quality of the gun is very good. The down side is the stock. I am like you and prefer laminate. I am in the process of building my own stock for it now. (will show pictures when it is complete). The mag is single stack polymer (like a hard plastic) and feeds the rounds nicely. Although it is plastic, the Tikka fits me well and lines my eye up with the scope better than any of the guns I emntioned above. If I am not mistaken, Tikka's are made in the same shop by the same poeple that make Sako.

Can't comment on the Sako or Cooper other than both have a great reputations and most owners seem to be very happy with them.

See if you can get your hands on each of them and see how they fit. You might find one that feels more natural and just works for you.

Happy shopping!

I have a Predator Hunter Max 1 and will be trying it out at the longer ranges this summer with some 69gr SMK, 69gr Nosler HPBT and some Hornady 68gr HPBT Match bullets. I just need to get some decent glass for it first.

You've obviously got the funds for it, so if I was in your position I'd buy the Tikka Varmint in .223 Rem. and not look back.

Just got a nice McGowen prefit for a Savage in 223 w/ 8 twist.

Might be just what you are looking for

Send me a PM or Email.

I really like Savage rifles but have shot pretty much all.

They can all work. Just pick the features you want and enjoy.

For scope, I can strongly recommend the Sightron SII Big Sky 6.5-20X50. Not many scopes are going to beat it for optics and features even if willing to pay more.

Tikka T3 Varmint in .223,,,hard to find a rifle that will pretty much shoot anything you feed it. Super smooth. This one has a replacement Robertson stock.

I do like that look, what is the MSRP on one of those? Plus I like the fact alot of gun builders here seem to like them as a base to start. I know if I buy a $2000 rifle scope money will be very tight, I bought a Sauer 202 last week in .243, decisions??

Well I will pick up my new Sako 85 in 22-250 on Wed with a new scope yet to be deceided. Probably a Leupold var lll in the 14 or 20 max power range, maybe the Boone & Crocket reticle, we will see. Had to do a trade deal to make the $$$ work. Cheers Roscoe

that savage 223 is sweet. if I was looking for a 223 id get it.

I personally kill coyotes with my 300 win mag....

I wish I could shoot a caliber thats cheaper to reload though.... shooting a ton of 300win is expensive.

Just wondering if anyone hunts Coyotes with a semi auto .223 or all bolt action? I'd like to get an xcr or something similar but not sure how they would work for that. Any thoughts?

Bolt or semi -- they all work. I've done both, and smiled big grins at times when multiple 'yotes came in when a SL8 or Swiss Arms happened to be in my hands. But at the the end of the day, I'm back to doing almost all of my coyote hunting with a Sako .222 and a Tikka .22-250, both bolt guns. Coyote hunting is like any other kind of hunting -- when all is said and done, what matters most is the accuracy and predictability of your first shot. I kill more coyotes when a bolt gun is in my hands, period.

I say one sight from the US and this guy has pretty much tried them all. Now he is using a 308 semi auto tactical style rifle(can't remember which brand) On his video looked like he owned or worked in a gun store.
But he did say if you really want to hunt coyotes use what ever you got. I was hot to trot for a semi but came down to earth and got a bolt gun. Cheers
