I'm reading from the Hornady website that .223 bolt guns (not AR) need a custom made modified case fired from your rifle for accurate measurement. They say to send 2 fired cases to Hornady to be custom made, in order to accurately fit the .223 chamber of your bolt action rifle, along with $15. US. This service is only offered to US residents. Is there any where in Canada to send the fired cases ? Or get the same service ?
Thanks

If you live close to the border and have an address that they can ship to....Ogdensburg, NY UPS store for example...pop over, send them the cases, then have them ship the finished cases to the US address. Not sure if a modified case is ITAR, so check on that.

I don't understand why Hornady needs 2 fired cases. What is being custom made?

I have shipped fired cases across the border multiple times to get custom chamber reamers made. They are not ITAR. For customs purposes they were listed as SAMPLES with no commercial value as per the manufacturers directions. Never had an issue.

They make custom dies.

Brass is an ITAR material, fired or not. As such, no problem you shipping it south, but a real hassle shipping it from there to here. If they shipped your 2 cases back, they either broke ITAR rules and didn't get caught, or they filed them as returns to sender which still takes paperwork, but less if I remember correctly. Or, if they were sending a firearm, they had to file the export paperwork anyway. Before you say it, yes, this is totally silly, but it is the law in Uncle Sam's country.

I would just keep the 2 cases if I was Hornady.

Just trying to think about how much the life of your brass could be extended by custom dies, and what they would have to be worth in order for custom dies to be worth while, keeping in mind that there is only so much life in the barrel to recover the cost. What other reason would you want custom dies? Do you have a custom chamber?

Modified cases for the Hornady OAL gauge , can be made using a 5/16 x 36 tap.
It's not a common size , but it is available.( eBay, amazon etc.)

The "send us some cases and we'll built you a modified one" thing is for obscure calibers that they don't make or for rifles with custom cut/reamed chambers.

If you have a standard .223 Rem chamber you can order the off the shelf one, I got mine from Higginsons...

It doesn't have to be perfect looking and if you screw up grab another of your fired case and try again. Mine turned out fine first try, few scratches on the wall from a spin in the vice but I just sanded them out.

I think the idea is you'd get a more accurate measurement from a case that was fire formed to your chamber.
