I just picked up a savage 10fp in .223. What ammo would be the best to blow gophers up?

i have not shot gophers yet but i have gotten good groups with barnes varmint grenades with 26.5gr of bl-c 2 powder. and winchester small rifle primers.

What bullet weight would that be? I have found them to be very innaccurate in all weights. I loaded them with Benchmark, though....

It depends in the rifle barrel twist. If yours is 1 in 9 inch...I have found that the 55 g vmax ahead of 23 grains IMR3031 and crimped. Vapor city.

55 grain V max vaporize them. 27 grains of W748.

I've been using the 40 gr Ballistic Tip pushed by 27 grs of H335 in my 223's....used to use 50's but the 40's give more impressive results upon impact.

What about for off the shelf ammo? And yea I got a 1:9 twist.

As punkrockboy stated, your best bet is the Winchester stuff.

I use 13.5gr of Blue Dot pushing a 55gr V-Max or 55gr Hornady SPSX or 50gr Varmint Grenades
Cheap shooting & great results.

if the win bulk stuff will shoot for you, it will be fine. It would not group better than 3" in my Savage. it took much reloading to finally find something that will shoot.. that being 55g Nosler Btips ahead of H335

sorry i didnt see you had replied a question to my post. they are fifty grain varmint grenades.

Varmint grenades blow chunks - not in a good way.

I've had excellent success with 55gr VMAX over 24.5 grains of AA2230 powder. Blows gophers into tiny little morsels. Tons of fun!

I wouldn't use them on coyote that I want to harvest the pelt though... but it DOES kill them!

I also vote for the white box winchester hollow points. I tried some American eagle at the 40 yard indoor range and they grouped over an inch. The winchesters left a ragged hole....I'd say probably about half and inch at 100 yards.

I'd say the Winchester is VERY accurate.
