Is it ok to shoot 223 in 5.56. I have a Norc cqa I was under the impression and was told it was a .223 but I received the rifle and the lower says 5.56?

You can shoot 223 in a 5.56, but not the other way around. Pretty sure the Norinco's are 5.56, but like others have said.....check the barrel.

Load and shoot, you are good to go .223 is just fine in a 5.56 chamber, happy shooting.

(I have shot 5.56 in a .223 chamber and don't see a problem doing so, before you all go out and do it I recomend you do the research and draw your own opinion on it. My favorite quote I've come accross looking into it is something along the lines of "before the Internet came out plenty of .223 rifles have digested 5.56 without issue" I am also STILL looking for an incedent where shooting 5.56 in a .223 chamber went bad)

The stickied thread is a good start. Click here

I have a 14.5" norinco and the barrel is not marked only the lower reciever, I do also believe it is a 5.56 chamber in them though.
I shoot mostly American eagle .223, but I have put some 5.56 through it.

You just don't want shoot 5.56mm in bolt action rifles due to the fact 5.56mm has higher chamber pressures.

What could happen? Or better yet. What has happened? Any sources? I've done it and I'm still around.
I'm not saying your wrong but I've been looking for evidence that it has caused problems and keep coming up blank.

I shot hundreds and hundreds of rounds of 5.56 through my ".223 Rem" barrel Savage bolt gun.

It's fine.

It's all fine. Blast away.

There is no evidence anywhere that it has ever caused any problems, At least I haven't seen it, nor anyone else I know, nor anyone on here has posted any actual evidence. It's just internet #### measuring nonsense.

I've done it both ways with many many rounds.
I know a lot of personal friends who have and still do it all the time both ways.

It's fine!

First , if you look at the bolt and barrel extention on AR and bolt on let say a 2 lug ( Winchester , Remington ) , 3 lug ( Tikka, Sako, Browning A bolt etc ) I don't think you can say that the Bolt action does not have sufficient shear strength to handle additional pressure of 5.56 ( about 62K psi ) vs Saami ( about 55k psi ) . We know this because there are lots of non Weatherby chambered rifles chambered in the Wby magnums which run at 65k to 70k psi !

One of the big differences between the two chambers can be seen below

http://www.combatsimulations.com/ar15/manuals/223vs556.pdf

Although the . 025" additional freebore doesn't seem like much, but it makes a signficant difference. This is the trick Weatherby uses to allow very high chamber pressures. If you take a Weatherby and set the barrel back and rechamber without freebore , you will see significant spike in pressure. For example, my MkV in 257Wby ( kills deer like lightning ) loads , if used in my buddies 257 ( had freebore removed ) will actually flow brass into ejector hole !

I have fired lots of 5.56 in my Remington 700 chambered in 223 and have not experienced any hard bolt lift, brass flow in ejector etc

Having said that, my buddy has a H&R Handi rifle 223 ( break open action ) , and if you shoot 5.56 in that it locks up action well, and when you managed to get it open, it typically causes extractor to slip off case head, resulting in stuck case

So yes, I have seen real work instances its not a good idea to fire 5.56 in 223

didnt you read the spaceship manual that came with your CQ?

it says its 5.56 in there,

enjoy your better annihilating power over active group objects already

HAS ANYONE ACTUALLY SEEN A .223 GUN GO BOOM AFTER FEEDING IT 5.56 AMMO?

PLEASE POST PHOTOS.

I just bought 3200 rounds of Norc from Canada Ammo (thanks Chris!).
I'm not the least bit concerned about blowing up my Min-14, but if I do, I'll post pics.
Until then, remain calm. :)
