.223 in a single shot

Hi guys,

I used to have an NEF single shot rifle in .223, .30-06 and 12ga. I really liked the versatility of it, but in a moment of weakness, I sold it (to pay for a few hours in a Cessna so it wasn't all bad).

Anyway, I'm thinking about picking up another one, but... I remember having trouble with accuracy out around 200 yards with both the .223 and .30-06. Are these rifles (in your experience) capable of MOA out to 200 yards and beyond? I really can't go on what my past experience was because at the time, I was a very young shooter and I'm sure my technique wasn't what it could have been.

Any other thoughts or comments on this rifle? I shoot mainly rimfire and I'm looking to get back into centrefire. I'm on a bit of a budget, hence the focus on the in-expensive single shot. I'll be mainly using it in .223 for varmint and target.

My father shoots the .223 Handi Rifle and loves it, he uses it for mainly varmint and target as well. We were out two weekends ago at a friends farm and he was trying some 200+ yard shots and was able to hit them without a problem(he claims his scope was off for the first two shots, I claim BS) the only problem he said he had was with certain ammo getting stuck or not firing well...but that can be said with any firearm really.
 
I use my .223 at ranges beyond 400 yards. target to 1000 yards and vermin til I cannot see them in the scope. A lot depends on your powder load and ammo weight. but I have heard of targets being hit at 1400 with a .223.
 
Matthew: If you're on a tight budget, than I'd say that the Stevens 200 was made for you and it'll shoot tiny little groups. It's a repeater rather than a single which is rather handy depending on your varmint hunting. Look around the forum, there's so much said about them that it would be redundant for me to add anything. :)
 
Another option is the Baikal single shot rifle.

There is a gun shop here on PEI that is selling everything in the store at cost right now. He has a coupleof them in .223 and .222. hammerless and break open with chrome lined bbl. Smoother trigger and no "click" when cocking the hammer.

The steven may yet be your best bet but if you want a nice single, these IMO are better than the NEF.
