A question for any people who have or are serving in Afghanistan. Others need not reply.

Edited for clarity:

Service Personnel: If you could pick your own rounds for working in Afghanistan, what would it be and why?

Just looking for opinions on what the guys using the stuff would want.

5.56mm service ammunition, directions for use:

1- Acquire legitimate non-electric pop up target in sights;
2- Squeeze trigger to deploy projectile;
3- Assess result.

Repeat as necessary.

It's just like 9mm as a service pistol round: Sure it may not work for a one shot stop EVERY time, but VERY FEW calibers do... Fire one round, then assess whether you need a second round - This is the way we train our "nice" soldiers and police, because we are Canadian, and the world respects us for being warm and fuzzy all of the time, in both official languages.

(Tongue in cheek - MHO)

Maybe, but isn't an update worthwhile since new calibers and people's exposure to them have changed since the last time this has been run into the ground?

6.5 and 6.8 calibres? Older threads may not have included any recent servicemen's experience as they are still relatively new.

The 5.56 round is light, which is a bonus if you are humping it around all day. You can also carry more. From what I have seen (and I saw a lot of combat) 5.56 is not too bad of a round, it makes them dead. We do have 7.62X51 in the C6 GPMG if it is needed. I did see some guys that were trialing a really kewl version of the AR-10. You can sit around all day arguing is there a better round. There most likely is. In the end this is what we've got. The 7.62X39 does not have the stopping power that some seem to think on this board. It is a copper jacketed non-expanding bullet, goes right through a person. I knew an Afghan National Army guy that got shot in the chest during a TIC. Comes over to me after it was done and shows me that the bullet went through two steel magazines and stopped right at his ballistic plate. Allah was surely watching over this gent. The main problem we faced was the walls and even the LAV's had a hard time with some of them. The tanks had no problems but who wants to hump a 105mm on their back all day.

Yeah, superior at being wimpy:)

Not necessarily. It depends on the type of bullet. Same with the .223. Military has to use fmj (ball) ammo which takes away some of the potential capabilities of said caliber's. Remember, weight is an issue too. Try walkin around with the same number of 7.62 as .223. Personally, I would also rather have a high cap 9mm than 8 rds of .45. Of course it doesn't matter for civvie's or for most soldiers who don't have the choice of carrying a pistol anyway (that's another issue)

Thanks PsyEx. I appreciate the input.

I'm sorry, for not being clearer.

I'm sure the .223 is a fine round. I love it myself. I wanted to know if soldier had their choice of round, what would it be? Is there another round that you would rather have? Why?
