.223 load

Thanks for all the info. This was the feedback I was looking for lastnight. I kept coming back to the computer and doing more research as I was learning about these bullets. As for coal it was a starting point for me before I found a couple new websites as I didnt have anymore info on them. I know now I should have chosen the 77gr smks or maybe even 69. I get the feeling these will be up for sale. The only info on the box was to use in a 7-8 twist only. I just bought my bullet puller the other day and lately it has been getting used ALOT. Learning to load for my 308 was alot easier LOL.

Thanks again for all the info everyone. I will post again my results from my range trip, probably today.

Ok now I am getting somewhere. Much better groupings and I will load up some 24.5's seated closer to the lands that what I did. That should get me real close. Here is what I shot today plus 5 rounds of whinchester stuff.

A lot of guys use the exact same powder charge under their 77 gr smk load, as they do under their 80 gr smk load.

Try that same powder charge with the 77's except at 2.260" OAL. See what happens.

I am going to pick up a box of the 77smks next. I dont mind single loading once in awhile but magazines are much better. Just glad I was the issue and not the rifle.

The ol lady is in the U.S. on business right now. I sent here the same pics as I posted above and said her rifle is shooting much better now. She still isnt happy with those groups lol. She said that is it? Some people I tell yeah.

Tough crowd!

I just bought a Rock River Arms National Match A4 AR-15. I'll fiddle with some 77 gr SMK loads and post them.

I am going to start with Varget at 23.5 and move towards 24.5.

Taking a break from reloading for a bit. So I guess I found my load to play with for a bit. I loaded 4 up at 24.5grns at a coal of 2.550. Loading one into the rifle and it was jammed into the lands pretty good. Got out the sharpy and started to shorten the round 0.010" at a time. I am back to my length of 2.490". I dont have a comparator so i was getting different lengths by measuring the tip. Set up my die for an average of 2.485" and should be just off the lands. I figured the bullet was touching the lands at about 2.494" give or take a thou.

I do believe i will have to mark this post for my own records too. :D

Your 24.5 load looks like it's worth shooting several 5-shot or 10-shot groups now.

In your "25.0" group, is the lower left hole a double? If so, then that is also quite a good group, and would further increase the confidence that the "24.5" load is worth further investigation (because the 23.5, 24.0, 25.0 and 25.5 groups are pretty good; i.e. you're not "next door" to a bad load).

Sounds like your 2.490" COAL just happened to be a pretty good place to start. You might want to also try 2.480"; if it is just as good, it might be "safer" to go with that (i.e. virtually no chance of 99 of your rounds having a small amount of jump, and 1 of your rounds touching the lands).

Tell your wife she needs to bring home more bullets for her rifle... ;-)

I might do that. I made up 40 rounds last night at 2.485-ish. 10 thou shorter would be worth trying out. Obviously the wrong bullets for the gun so I might as well play around a bit.

Well I went to the store today and surprise. There is a big box of 77 smks sitting there. Grabbed them and went to find my 175smks but again nothing there. I am set up for 223 for awhile now but my main gun is going to be idle for a little bit. Might have to check wss and see if they have any.
