.223 loads

69 grain SMK, Hornady 68 & 75 grain BTHP. Varget (between 25 & 26 grains -use a manual, and work your loads up!). 205M primers. Winchester cases.
In a nut shell, this is what I use for my ARs, 1:7 twist barrels.

Knowing what this is being fed through would be a big help to narrow your selection.

I've been told that using CCI BR primers makes a big difference - I am just starting to reload and will be loading for .223 long range - the recipe I was given was Hornady 75 gr A Max, around 24 GR Varget (which is within the specs in the Lyman manual) with a CCI BR primer. This is for a Savage 12fvss, 26" barrel, 1 in 9 twist.

On same topic, anyone have a reduced load for .223 - looking for something for the indoor range, 50 yards. Just needs to stay level for 50 yds.

H4198 serves me well for 50 and 55 gr VMax.

Going to Hornady 68 gr BTHP, I have to switch to Varget which gives me something to play with in the upcoming weeks. I wonder if that would be a compressed load given the length of the 68 gr bullet? What is the OAL in your case?

Danny

OAL is 2.260". The powder doesn't compress if you use a drop tube. I use a little blue Forster Bonanza one I picked up from Russell's

Barnes 50 gr VarminAtor, 26 grain of AA2460, CCi primer in a prepped case.
I get 1/2 inches, 5 shot group at 100 yards and got a few at 1/4 inches when the right conditions were present.
As usual, use caution and start low and work up the load to 26 grains.
I got this combination on www.gunblast.com when reading an article about the same rifle I own, a Bushmaster Varmiter.
