223 Muzzle Brake - Is it really worth it?

Can you self-spot using your rifle and your scope?
If yes, then a muzzle brake is useless if not it might be a huge gain.
In my case with Tikka T3x, I can self-spot with 223 Rem, very light 243 Win load but can't with a heavy 243 Win load or a regular 308 Win load.
Even when only varmint hunting, this is extremely useful since you can see immediately when the bullet went and guess what happened and what to do next.
(You don't need a spotter and can shot much faster since your sight in always on target.
You can't think of it as have a "built-in head-up display" on your scope.)

I bought a Savage 10 stealth in 223 last year, it came with a brake. I was going to just remove it and use a thread protector but it’s shooting so well I don’t want mess with it. I wouldn’t bother with a brake on a light recoiling rifle though, unless it was a 3 gun comp gun or something.

I get significant enough recoil to move my hunting weight 22LR off target from field positions. If the movement continues after switching to heavy competition chassis, I will get a brake. For reference I’m getting 3” 10 shot groups at 100yds using my Savage Mk2 from a sitting position. Completely different position fundamentals from when shoot my ‘06 or 375.

Intermediate ballistics are from the moment your projectile exits your muzzle up to the point where it is no longer affected by the gases exiting your muzzle, that will lead into exterior ballistics.

Gases will still affect your projectile and its velocity a very small distance once it has left the muzzle, creating a Mach cone.
Intermediate ballistics are the reason you would use a flash hider to minimize flaming gases (your flash) or a muzzle brake to tame the recoil.

Crown will also affect Intermediate ballistics as to how your gasses are pushed behind the exiting projectile. If you go from a straight barrel to a muzzle device, that will play with your gasses exiting your muzzle so it will change your intermediate ballistics.

Not necessarily bad or good, just saying keep that in mind.
Ah OK, I've heard of this concept being referred to as "transitional ballistics" before. I think Kthomas mentioned something along these lines on the first page.

I installed one because it looks cool on a 16" barrel:) No device is going to help me shoot more accurately cause I suck at it.....

I like doing positional shooting and it helps keep the sights on target.

This, totally agree.

I don’t find it is necessary on a .223 or 5.56. Once you get into high power it cld help. In my opinion many add it for cosmetics more than anything. Your mileage may vary.

I had a SureFire ProComp on my Rem 700 ACC-SD .223 16" when I was done building it, and I would have to say I liked it, gun looked hot with that Pro Comp.

I also think if the gun would look great with the Surefire SOCOM Muzzle Brake as well.
