223 oal problem?

Just picked up a savage mod 11 in 223 and was gunna start out loading a handfull of rounds to test out but im still a bit of a newbie. I tried to check what i should use for an oal by putting a spent case that i squished a little bit to hold the bullet loosely into the chamber, but when i put it in the chamber and cycle it threw it never touched the lands. would this mean theres excess throat space or should i just go with the 2.260 oal length thats in my nosler book for this caliber? Or is this just because of the im using little 50gr's im having this problem?

I normally do the same steps as above and seat the bullet .010-.015 deeper then measured.

starting out with 23gr of varget.

I seated them to 2.3 oal witch is just enough so the bullet is completely seated in the whole neck. From what I understand this should be fine.

Id love some feedback befor i head for the range.

No problem in what you have used. What I do is back off the seater stem two or three revs and then seat the first bullet and see how t chambers. If it hits rifling, i back off a half tun for the next one. And so on.. once I have setting that does not touch rifling, i seat the longer rounds and carry on.
 
You need more varget and get the bullets kissing the lands and go with 80gr bergers if you have a 1/7 twist, one 9 max
i could get to work was 75gr bergers
 
I think you will need a few more grains of varget in there. Should be able to seat it out farther then what the book says. My 223 loads are seated to mag length (2.392") and do t come close to te lands at 2.420". When I load 40gr pills I seat them at 2.260 because that's as far out as they will go and still stay in the case lol. In my 1:9 twist I have had good luck with Berger tactical 77gr pills a well as many others from 36gr to the 77 listed above
 
So i should be safe then becuase i want to make sure the bullet is touching the whole neck. Im going to try some 7?gr's. Hopefully i can find some noslers around hear because im just not a fan of the bergers with all the "best of the west" hype but thats just me.
 
Did you know that Savage rifles have the same throat length as a AR15, I have two AR15s and a Stevens 200 .223 and they all have .0566 freebore. The only throat longer would be the Wylde chamber with .0619 of freebore.

The reason the throats are the same is because the chamber and throat must be big enough to fit a firearms company Lawyer in. Meaning you can fire 5.56 NATO ammunition safely in your bolt action Savage and not have pressure spikes or exceed rated chamber pressure.

Bottom line, you should be able to have a OAL just short of your magazine length as long as they feed.
