.223 on deer

22 Cal on deer, Man up ! get a deer gun :)

If you MUST hunt deer with a .22 caliber centerfire the .220 Swift/.22-250 is a better option.

If you are as cash-strapped as you say, maybe you may want to think about skipping a season as the incidentals such as ammo, gas, butcher, equipment, etc. will be monetary as well which should be factored in....

Tough situation.

First maybe see if you can borrow a rifle for yote, and keep a currently owned rifle that's better suited for deer? Or keep a yote rifle, and borrow a better suited deer rifle.

With a $400 budget, and wanting a scope that may be an issue.. Check EE and other areas, because you never know(I sold a savage package this spring for $300), but it might be a good idea to stick with irons untill times get better and things turn around if possible??

Right now money is very tight and when that happens my guns are usually the first to go
Here in NB if you want to hunt coyotes you can only 22 center fire or smaller cal. so I'm limited to one gun for deer and coyotes. And I tried search on this topic and found nothing

All I can say is: If money were tight, I wouldn't want to eat a coyote.

well i have not much to say other than agree with the 22-250(22wotkyns), or even 220 swift. another option is if you are currently using a 30-30 or a 30-06, you can try and find a 22 accelerator. best of both worlds. they r hard to fing but worth saving ur money.

There have ben lots of threads on this.

Bottom line- If you are going to do it, use a good bullet like a TSX or Nosler Partition, limit your shots to broadside and no further than about 100 yards. Put bullet behind the shoulder,in the lungs, and the deer will die.

I have a Vohre 222/23ga O/U. I asked Sierra about what bullet to use for deer. They said thay had a lot of postive feedback on the 69 Match hollow point.

Your Stevens will stabalize that bullet just fine.

My 222 has a 1:12 twist, so they suggested the 63 gr semi-spitzer SP or the 60 gr HP. they said the 60 HP would not exand as quickly and would give better penetration.

I tested those two on wet phone books and they were right. Have not yet tried on a deer.

I can only use a 22 center fire for coyotes. This rifle would be used on deer for 2 seasons and sitting home for 2 deer seasons is NOT going to happen

Well I traded for scope, a .410 ranger for a bushnell scopechief 2.5x8x32 would be alright on a stevens 200 in 223 or 22-250. I think I'm leaning towards the 22-250, I can get one for $400 taxes in and I have weaver bases and rings already. I would only use a barnes X bullet or nosler partition on deer

Why not just save a few שקל over the next year and buy a deer rifle next summer? It's not like deer season is right right around the corner.

NB's 22 centerfire rule is the reason so many 22-250 & 223 rifles are sold there. You can't be in the woods with any rifle larger than a 22 centerfire once you've taken your deer OR after the deer season is over... There is also a restriction on the size of shot you can carry when out with a shotgun, #2 & smaller, if memory serves me correctly...

If I had to have ONE rifle in NB, I would buy a 223. I say this because it is SO UNLIKELY that you will ever get a moose licence!!! ***Just ask SuperCub... It's a once or twice in a lifetime crap shoot to get a licence for moose in NB!!! If a lightening bolt DID happen to hit you & you got a moose tag, you could borrow a rifle for the 3 day hunt... And don't get me started on that "3 day hunt"... What a joke that is!

Anyhow, back on topic... I have a Stevens 200 in 308, my wife has a Stevens 200 in 243, both with Elite 3200 3-9x40 scopes & BOTH shoot under 1 inch @ 100 meters!

So, if I were you, I'd buy the Stevens 200 in 223 & put the scope you traded for on the rifle. My last comment will be to echo what other guys are saying, USE APPROPRIATE AMMO!!!

If you don't reload & don't have access to reloading equipment through a friend... Make the effort to track down Winchester's 64 grain PowerPoint 223 cartridge that they rate for deer.

There are many guys in NB that only have one rifle. But, they commit the "Cardinal SIN" of using varmit rounds in their 223 & 22-250 rifles when hunting deer. I DON'T RECOMMEND IT!!! Hopefully someone will chime in here & comment on whether it is even legal to use a varmit bullet when hunting deer. I don't recall what the NB regs say about it.

Cheers
Jay

you are on the right track.....if you are frugal...you will have enough money to get what you need ....get the .223 my buddy in NB has shot more deer with his old mini 14 than his centrefires.....don't go with the 22/250...the ammo is more expensive and you are very limited in what bullet weights that you can get and what the rifling on the gun will handle....the .223 is the way to go....you can use whatever bullet you want varmint or otherwise....but you will be limited to head/neck shots....which is usually not a problem to get that close hunting applepiles in NB!!!!! don't even bother with the body shot.....good luck to you........
