I would hunt rabbit with .223, head shots only, if I felt inclined to do so.
I've shot hundreds with .22lr in the head and I don't see the .223 being less capable.
Mind you, I don't own an XCR, but a bunny head is about 1.5", and you're talking ranges of under 40 yards in my experience. If you XCR can't reliably do 1.5" within 40 yards I'll trade you my SKS for it and you'll be better off.
As for the shotgun being cruel or wasting meat, that's nonsense. I've shot hundreds of rabbits and as many grouse with a shotgun and rarely is there even a single pellet in the meat. Aim for the head and you'll be surprised how rarely you get even a ding in your meat. We shot five spruce grouse last weekend on a fishing trip, and not a pellet in any of them, using a 12 guage, #7 1/2 shot.
