I made my mind up on a .223 and was getting a Tikka T3 hunter. There is alot of cheaper rifles such as the savage combo's and rem 700's. I own another tikka and know its going to be a good gun. But what about these cheap savages? Are they tack drivers too for the most part? I hate wasting money on junk rifles, lol.

They are good shooting rifles by all accounts. What you will lose over more expensive rifles is the trigger quality (assuming you're talking non-accutrigger) and the stock is flimsy on the Savages. If you want a utility gun that may not be much to look at, but will do its job, you cannot go wrong with the savages.

The Howa and Vanguard are a pretty decent "in-between" choice. They can be had for under $500 if you look around and they are great rifles.

The tikka T3 hunter I was looking at is used but like new. They want $750 for it, seems a little too much doesnt it?

The thing I never liked about some manufacturers chambering rifles for .223 (Remington for one) is the spacer used at the back of the magazine to compensate for using a very short cartridge in a standard short action. If I were to purchase another rifle in .223 it would have an action sized correctly for that shorter length. I believe that Sako had a specific action size and I am sure there are others.

Look at the CZ 527 line, mini mauser action perfect for the 223 class.

One of the great things about the Stevens is the twist it comes in, 1-9 I think, so you can try out a wide variety of bullet weights. The CZ"s are beauties but getting expensive these days. FS
