I've been thinking of a rifle for plinking, some target shooting and possibly ridding my friend's land of some wee beasties. I have some heavier caliber rifles, but would like to tame things down a bit...cheaper to shoot and easier on the shoulder, etc. What would you recommend within these parameters or is there something else I should look into? Range would probably max out at 250 - 300 meters.

Thanks for your input!

.223 is definitely your best bet. Many rifles available in that caliber, lots of ammo available , lots of reloading components if you go that route. And fairly economical to shoot.

Yeah well, both would be nice but the cost of flowers and dinners for my wife would break me. Any recommendations on shooters that don't break the bank but still maintain quality in either caliber?

Cheers and thanks for the info, folks!!

Both cartridges will do the job, I have both. If you reload I would go with the 204, if not stick with the 223.

words to live by.....223 is the handsdown choice for factory ammo users....the WW white box 45 gr loads shoot well in most rifles...

I've shot the 223 for almost 20 years now,...just picked up a 204 to try out next gopher season...

The CZ runs right around $1000,certainly not that high priced.

$1000 would be way out of my price range.... Believe it or not, Some Gunnutz don't have alot of funds to purchase firearms. I'm in a similar boat as the OP and my total buget for a rifle with optics is $600 or less! So please don't assume everyone can drop a grand on just a rifle at the drop of a hat.

IMHO 223 Rem is way more versatile then 204 Ruger. More bullets and cases to select from for handloading and the factory ammo selection is not even worth discussing... don't get me wrong I like the 204 Ruger but if I had to have only one, it would be a 223.

.223 for sure. Guns, you can go from a used Stevens around $300-350 all the way up to thou$and$. Brass, from cheap used off the EE to Lapua around $80/100, with choices in between. Bullets, depends on twist, from light 30-35gr varmint bullets all the way up to 90's for targets and long range. Can be as cheap or expensive as you want, is pretty easy to load for, factory ammo is about as cheap as you'll find in a centerfire short of milsurp in other calibers.

I had a .204, more of a barrel burner, for me was fussier to load for, for sure a lot more cleaning of the barrel...on the other hand seeing a number that started with a '4' on the chrony was kinda cool. Got rid of it, though wouldn't totally rule out owning one again.

I have a .221 Fireball incoming, that I'm really excited to try out. .223 case cut down by around 1/3, no recoil, less powder usage, somewhat more limited on bullet selection (say, 50gr max as is 1/14 twist), but still 85-90% of the speed of a .223. CZ makes em in their 527 varmint series, last I looked Clay had one in stock if you want to try something a little more esoteric. I even know where to find some brass in stock right now, I am led to understand it can be a bit hard to come by as only Rem makes it factory.

204 Ruger is not fussy..no way.. no how..I have had a lot of guns..never had a fussy one yet..fussy shooters maybe.

My total limit would be $1K max - rifle and scope included. Any higher and I would be in the dog house. I would consider used but my lack of experience renders me useless as to what to look for and what to watch out for. Live and learn I guess.

Thanks again guys
