223 or 22-250

I just got my first long range rifle and went with a .223. So far I am pretty happy with it. Ammo is available everywhere and is still cheap. Later on if you want to get a bigger caliber you can go alot bigger and still have the .223 for cheaper costs.

I just looked up the ruger 204 in a shooting times artical looking at 4200 FPS in a facory 32gr horandy load juat so you know!

Yeah, but how well does that 32 gr. bit 'o fluff do past 400 m, when the wind picks up. Those lightning fast little things do fly flat, until they start to die, but to my way of thinking, true long range means shoot a bullet with a high enough bc to hold up against the wind. You can determine distance, and adjust for trajectory. Then you can worry about the wind. At distance, that's enough to worry about. I find myself figuring out what bullet I want to shoot, and how fast, and then deciding what cartridge to use to launch it. Non handloaders forget that a 222, 223, 22-250, 220 swift all shoot the same bullets. It's factory loaded ammo and the twist rate of barrels that decide what those cartridges can/will do for you. Learn to shop for barrel twist rate, and get yourself a loading setup, and you are on your way to a whole new world. If you really want it all, get a scope with finger adjustable turrets and a range finder. Accurate shooting is much easier what you can dial on your distance and just worry about the wind...

204 Ruger is not a long distance cartridge, however it is extremely accurate at short range (<400) and its extremely low recoil make it ideal for slayng gophers all day long and watching the spectacular velocity-driven action through the scope. Tipped with a 40 gr Vmax it drops yotes juuuust fine. It's just a different cartridge, not better, not worse.
