What's the intended use? If I am strictly using it for blowing up gophers with high-volume shooting, then 223 wins hands down. If the .22-250 has the faster barrel twist and can shoot the heavies for deer, etc, then it beats the .223 six ways from Sunday.

It costs me about 4.5 cents per round more to load 22-250 with varget and vmax 50gr than to load the same in 223.....for blowing up gophers if I go through 400 rounds/day thats like 18.00 more...cant really see how the 223 wins hands down...
223 no question. Burns approx. 10 grains less powder, less muzzle blast, can see the hits, barrel lasts 4 times longer, cheaper to shoot, brass is free, if loaded up properly with 53 V-Max can hit anything that a .22-250 can. If/when I need more horsepower I go to the .243 Win. with 70 gr varmageddons, now that is a serious coyote killing machine.Don`t get me wrong, the 22-250 was one of my favourite cartridges until the .223 and especially the .204 came on the scene. The .204 is way better than the 22-250 for all of the same reasons. I just got tired of changing barrels so often.

Because I used to burn out the barrel every year and you can`t see the hits.

22-250 for me. That's what is in the old man's gun cabinet so thats what I use. Works good on the coyotes I've shot.
OP wanted something for plinking and shooting odd crows. No coyotes on the list. 223 for the win.
I have both in custom rifles. The 22-250 is barrelled for the 80+ grain bullets and a blast to shoot out to 1000 yards and beyond. The 223 is set up for the 50 -55 grain bullets and is a tack driver as well. I don't use either for much other than target shooting. For beavers to coyotes I use the 17 Hornet or the 22 Hornet. I think I'm going to sell the 223.
The VLP wears a Sightron SIII 8-32x56....haven't had a problem so far.....

You must be harder on barrels than me! You gota take more than one gun and let'em cool a bit....
