hey there hi there ho there neighbor!

just a quick question for the forum.
im looking to pick up a lighter caliber accuracy gun.
i already shoot a 308 but wanted to pick up a single shot precision rifle in a nice small caliber for punching paper and punching gophers and other small critters.

i went in thinking 243 just for the simple fact that ive used the round for deer hunting for years and really like it.
but when i got to the store to see what they had i found the helpful lad behind the counter steering me to the 6.5 Creedmoor.

so i put off my purchase and came home to do some reading (this was a year or so ago)
and now im caught up.
i want to pick up a single shot heavy barrel center fire in a small round but am stuck as to what would be a better choice.
the 223 sounds good, light and the ammo is endless.
the 6.5 Creedmoor is a nice flat shooting round but im concerned that its another one of the flash in the pan calibers that will be extinct in 10-20 years.
the 243 i think ill maybe leave out of the race as i already have that in a deer gun.

so here is the question.
same brand, same price - what one do i go for.
the 223 or the 6.5 ???

bolt action with the bull barrel.

thanks for the help.

Savage makes some nice rifles that meet your criteria.

ya i was looking at Savage.
was gonna wait and see what the new Ruger American Predator's looks like first, they have the hammer forged barrels that are threaded and are inexpensive.
was leaning towards one of those with a nice piece of glass on it to start and see how i like it.

the only drawback that i dont like about them is there are no bigger mags for them and i dont know if im sold on the cheap plastic rotary mags they have.
maybe if they came in metal....

6.5 creedmor or anyother 6.5 is noy near to be extinct , they are in full explosion, same for the 6 mm

Go for the 6 mm or the 6.5. Their is a ton of choice and you need to read alot of real data and decide what you want exactly to get(velocity, barrel life, brass choice, application and etc)

6 br
6 dasher
6x47 lapua

6.5 creedmor
6.5x47 lapua
260 rem

I just sold off my 243 and bought a 223. I found that the 243 was too much for gophers and even coyotes (but fun). The 223 is cheaper to load and a better fit for what I was looking for. No opinion on the Creedmoor, it is kind of an exotic and I have learned to steer clear of those.

Wow, that is some gun control. you have some great patience

If you shoot a 308 might as well get a creedmoor you can make creedmoor brass out of 308 and its a superior caliber to 223

Way too much work. (I know, I made some. Soooooo much neck trimming needed)

Much easier to just neck up 22-250 Brass and fire form it.

That being said, build a 6BR (My favorite BTW). You won't find anything more accurate at short ranges (aside from maybe a 6PPC) and can still stretch it out to 1000yd and beyond with great success.

1:8 Twist will shoot 60+ gr Varmint bullets right up to the 105/107/108 offerings if you want to stretch it's legs.

since there seems to be a lot of good guys that know what they are talking about lingering around tonight what do you all think of the new Ruger Predator line?
if i where to pick one up in the 223 would that be a good starter gun to get the juices flowing?
its listed as a 22" threaded heavy barrel with a 1:8 RH twist.
i was kind thinking of getting this with a decent optic and seeing if i like precision shooting.
if not then im only out 6-700 bucks all in.
if i like it then i can feed the animal and look at bigger better guns later.

I had a Sightron 10X50X60 LRTD that was sitting in the safe, one of my grandson is an avid marmott hunter ( is first rifle was and Axis package in 223 ), he wanted something more accurate for the long shots, i got him, that Moosberg target 223 rifle, fitted the Sightron ...
He is being cleaning Prescott-Russell from it's marmott since then... This entry level rifle is inexpensive, take AR mags and is very accurate, the Sightron is a proven scope...
With the WWB 45 gr ammo, he dispatch them easy to 300 metres with an occasional 375-400 metres shot... The kid is impressive....

Cant go wrong here for many years... JP.
