.223 performance in shorter barrel?

Been debating getting a Ruger American compact in .223 for a mid range coyote rifle.Already have a heavy barrel .204 but it is a little heavy for walking around calling.Will the .223 perform well in this barrel length (18")for this purpose? Thanks

Yes... I have three .223's with 18" barrels... gave up approximately 200 fps from 22-24"... but they are just as accurate... barely notice the shift in POI and I'm pretty sure the dead coyotes didn't notice.

Not for me... one has a brake and still is not offensive. But they are MUCH nicer to handle in the bush... especially slung over your shoulder and swinging with in tight quarters... I have never regretted a barrel chop.
