Hello everyone, im looking into getting a .223 cal plinker, because ammo is cheap. Now, what are your opinions on a decent BEGINNER rifle? Left handed preferred but can make do with right. Also, looking to keep relatively cheap... i know im picky.

Thanks

They don't come much cheaper than Stevens 200. I had one here yesterday in .243 not shooting. Loctited all the scope and base screws and tightened the stock to action bolts and it put 3 shots into a nickel with factory ammo with a 6lb trigger @ 100yds. Not bad. Another happy coyote hunter!

Slugfest, are you looking for something to shoot dime size groups as far as you can, or to blaze through as much ammo as fast as you can? If the first is true, look into the stevens or basic savage, if the latter is the case, look into a mini-14.

The Savage 12FV has the same stock as the Stevens (but a wider forend) and the Accutrigger with a 26" heavy barrel for around $630 new (about $850 on the EE :)). It comes in lefty for the same price. Just saying.

Yeah really, some people are out to lunch with their prices on the EE. Boys, you can't sell a used gun for more than retail. Why buy used from you when I can have NIB?!?! Dummy...

I'm seriously looking at a Stevens 200 in .223 The money I save can be put into optics...

However, I'm curious about the accutrigger. Is it worth the money to spend a little more on a better trigger? Is the Stevens trigger adjustable?

Holy crap thanks for the quick replies! Im just looking for something cheap and fun to shoot. Im a beginner with all this so i dont expect to put a bullet through the same hole over and over. I will definitely take a look into the stevens and savage! Thanks! :D

Stevens and Savage are both excellent choices. Don't count out the Remington 700 though as well, as is has aftermarket parts and skilled gunsmiths available everywhere.

Try to get out to a store, handle them, work the actions, try the triggers, and see what fits you best.

Buy whats feels right for you, and you buy once.

Looks like ive got lots to look into now. This gun is just going to be for blowin sh*t up and just trying to learn how to account for wind and bullet drop and whatnot. I know a .223 isnt that spectacular of an impact, but its cheapish to shoot all weekend. I just hate that ammo gets expensive so quick! Thanks for having the patience to help a complete novice. I owe ya a beer. Haha.

I'm sure you know but I have to ask, why not just get a rim fire. You can learn about wind and drop at much shorter ranges and much ammo cost.

Of course, long term to save some cash and have more fun, HANDLOAD :D

I was going to get one, but then its just not entertaining enough.. its like a pellet gun. Haha i just cant get myself to buy something so weak... ya know? Even though ammo is dirt cheap. As for reloading... doesnt that get expensive unless you do LOTS of ammo?
