I am really struggling to keep my powder choices down in the cabinet. I am shooting a Ruger No1 with a 24inch bulltube. The load I want to develope is either using IMR 4320 and or IMR 4895, small rifle mag primer. Bullet of choice is a 55gr FMJ and 55gr Tracer for gong shooting. I know there are some amazing ball powders out there and am wondering if I am wasting my time with these powders. My Lyman manual gives it some impressive speeds with the 55grain bullet. Any feed back good bad or ugly is always welcome:wave:

I've tried a lot of powders in .223, but with 55 gr. bullets I've found my best accuracy with plain old IMR4064.....the sweet spot is usually between 26 to 26.5 gr., which results in a moderately compressed load. I don't know what velocity that gives, but they go where I point the gun.

223 powder question , i use a ruger stainless varmiter i use a 60gr. hornady sp. with 25.5 gr. of imr 4895 and it shoots great . ps it has a 26 inch barrel . malcolm m.

I use H335, or WC845 until my last 21 pounds are gone.:( It's so effortless to drop a few hundred charges of ball powder that I can't be bothered to use anything else for gopher and plinking ammo.

I like Win. 748 also. Works good with the RCBS powder measure. With the extruded powders like 4895 it feels like the grains get chopped or sheared going through the powder measure.

I've tried Varget and three or four other powders, my Ruger likes IMR-3031 the best. Try a few powders, work up the loads and see what is most accurate in your rifle.

H4895 is a great .223 (amongst others) powder. Varget is good but I find it better at bolt-action loads. H4895 seems more consistantly accurate in a semi-auto.

For your No. 1, IMR 4227 is a good powder for the loads you'd be looking at. Especially if you home cast lead.

IMR4895 (and presumably 4320 too) makes good .223 ammo. The small case mouth of the .223 means you have to keep an eye on the powder grain sticks, to make sure that they all get into the case. Ball powders meter and flow more freely, which makes it easier to load them. But both ball powders and stick powders will make fine ammo.

You should get a decent load wth 4895. H or IMR. Both work. I have used Vit N133 with the 55 Vmax for years, inc out to 600m. It runs through the powder measure really nice.

I have been using H335 for .223 55g FMJ for about 2 months in my AR-15 so far 400 round and 0 jams grouping is less than 2" at 100 meters with open stock sites of AR15

I have just made up my frist load or H335 for .308 150g fmj bt, only problem is i haven't had the chance to test it yeat (for my rem 700 sps v)
