This might sound odd but I cannot get my Savage 11 (1:9 twist) to shoot with Varget! I get 1.5" if I am lucky, most are about 2" groups.

My loads to date have been new Win brass, tried CCI and Win primers, 55gr VMax and 55gr FMJBT, OAL from 2.2-2.26 and charges from 24-26gr. No dice.... Cheap 50gr JHP American Eagle shoots MOA.

I know a guy who uses H335 and gets very good accuracy from an Axis, but apparently its very temp sensitive?

I am thinking of either H322 or Benchmark for 55gr plus bullets.

What says the forum of these propellants in the .223?

Thanks

Most of the FMJ projectiles are poor accuracy.

Try H322 powder, CCI 450's, 55g .224 SP projectiles (available as bulk).

The powder isn't *that* critical, but matching the projectile to what your barrel likes is key.

Thanks,
So you recommend a Mag primer with H322?

I agree that bulk FMJ's can't be relied upon for top accuracy but the vmax's seem to do well in many .223's.

I use h4198 with bulk fmj moa all day long with mixed headstamp range pick up brass. Great for plinking. Cfe223 is what I use for 52 amax and 75 bthp. Outstanding stuff. I use cci400 for everything and it goes bang everytime and I've tested this in -30C.

It might like a heavier bullet as well. My savage model 12 hates any of the lighter bullets but has shot every 69gr or 70gr bullet that I have fed sub MOA even most factory ammo in that weight range has been MOA or tighter I have some 75gr bergers I'm going to try as well.

I have found a few 1/9" rifles including a Savage shot best for me with Varget and Nosler 60gr Ballistic tips. Honrady 68gr HPBT match were also good. Didn't pick up any 69gr Sierra MK yet. I didn't like the accuracy from the bulk 55gr FMJ so I havent loaded any in a while.

Iam trying out h4895 with my .223 used it only with heavier bullets and good results so far. I like it because it is so close to full load density without compressed loads i got with varget to get the same velocity. It has been temp stable so far, have more time shooting my .204 over a wide temp range and have had really good results with 32 gr vmaxes.

Our 1:9's like a longer bullet... best we've found so far is the Hornady 68 grain BTHP with 25.7 grains of H4895.

CCI450 primers are recommended for the pressures developed in .223 Rem (thicker cups) (compared to the CCI400's).
.223 Rem max working pressure is 55,000 PSI

[extract]

- Cases that utilize small rifle primers and operate at moderate pressures (40,000 psi) can use CCI 400, Federal 200, Rem 6 1/2, or Win SR. Such cases include 22 CCM, 22 Hornet and the 218 Bee. Other cases that use the small rifle primer can use the above primers only if moderate loads are used. Keep to the lower end of reloading recommendations.

- Cases that utilize small rifle primers and operate at higher pressures (55,000 psi) should use CCI 450, CCI BR4, Fed 205 and Rem 7 1/2.

Thanks,
I was under the impression that only the ball powders benefitted from mag primers? There is a lot of .223 data that uses regular SR primers. I just picked up some Benchmark and Hogdons data uses WSR.

I am another huge fan of wc735. I Have used it for bullets in the 55 to 69 grain range. Very good accuracy, top velocities and measures like poop through a goose.

H335 is working for me. It's a little sensitive, but nothing that isn't easily dealth with. I developed the load at Saskatchewan summer temps (about 20 C) and I had it out the other day at -25C. Still worked fine. My POI dropped a little from zero, but I still had no trouble shooting 69gr matchkings on a 12" plate at 500 yards. I found the heat mirage from the barrel in the cold temps affected my shooting way more than the "temp sensitive" powder.
