223 rifle, whats the impact of the 20 inch barrel vs 24-26?

Those rem 700 with the 20 inch barrel look easy to carry. Whats the loss compared to the 26 inch ?

Looking for a "tactical looking" 223.

700P looks nice. Any other ideas? (26'', good stock)
700 SPS tactical (hogue stock, 20 '')

700 sps varmint? (synthetic stock, 26'')

Which one would you get?
Probably 100-300 yards.

IMHO I thinking anything over 20" is a waste on a 223, I am going to build a 18.5 ish 1/7 twist ( will go SPS cut down to 18.5 first)rem 700 in the summer mid weight barrel

now some guys like longer barrels for speed but I think the 223 is best at the 500 meter max range(300 on wolves) some guys kick ass with it way out there too ,but for me anything over 500 is a bigger gun

Seems to me that 20 makes sense.... my 300 win mag was 22'', so I dont really see why a 223 would have to be 26''.

What about the quality/precision of the 700 sps tactical? 700 action, hogue stock, etc.
Whats more precise, 700 sps tac or a savage? Or they are the same?

Savage and rem both shoot very well. You'll just get arguments about whats better.

Savage might be easier to work on in your garage but there is far less after market parts for the Savage.

I think the Savage has a faster twist....but if your max range is around 300 55 gr bullets work really good and there cheep cheep cheep

i have a rem700 police in 223, it does feel long for a 223, will eventually rebarrel to a fast twist 18-20''...it is heavy, which is nice because you can spot your own hits, which is why i love shooting 223

I wana go 223 precisely because its cheap to reload, and I dont see the point of shooting 300 win mag at 100 yards for 3x the price.....

90gr bullets this is from Hodgdon powders site
max loads run 2450 to 2540 fps probaly a 24" barrel

http://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp

fellows I shoot with are using 90gr at 2780 to 2840 fps with 30" barrels
28 in with max load of Varget 2740 fps
a 20" would not be close to these speeds, and it would not get to 1000y for F class as you would be subsonic which hurts accuracy.
But for 300 to 600 your 20 " barrel will work fine but remington only makes a 1/9 twist some will stablize the 75gr Bergers but I have seen a couple that wouldn,t but they shot the 69gr & 70 gr good.
You will not be competetive shooting the 50gr bullets BCs are to low for 300 to 600y the 80s and 90s will plain outshoot your 20" 1/9twist
Are accuracy load is RL 15 and 80gr Bergers at 2930 fps

The shorter the better up to a point. Way easier to move, carry, and a 26 or 30" barrel in a helo is too much sugar for a nickel for the SWAT guys.

When TacOps developed the Tango 51 and S, IIRC they took a 26" barrel to 18" and lost no accuracy and only ~30fps .

I know we are focusing on .223 but you see my point.
In the States I used a .223 Bushmaster with 11.5" barrel and had to show proficientcy out to 300yds. I really hated to sell it but it was prohibited in Canada.

I would like to try the Savage 10 FCP .223 but with a 20" barrel on yotes around here in Ontario.

I own a 700 SPS Varmint in 308. Very happy with the rifle, but I had to replace the Rubbermaid stock as soon as I got it. So you might be better off getting the tactical which, I think, comes with a better stock.

I know a lot of places have the 700sps tactical. Cabela's,wholesale sports, I am sure you will find some with some of the sponsors.Grouse river in Kelowna has some.

223 barrel length vs velocity

If you google 223 barrel length vs velocity there are several articles on the effects of changing the barrel length.
The one by accurate reloading started at 22 inch and reduced in one inch increments to 10 . Very interesting read.

why would it be prohib here?

Jamie,

I think your asking me. They would frown on me having a 11.5" barrel Bushmaster with a rate of fire like a water hose and double attached 60 round mags inside the motherland.

And me a well healed, retired, civilian gentleman.:D

What about the savage 10 FCP-K ? boxmag, brake, accutrigger, accustock. 24 inch

I have a small tendency to love savage precision, accutrigger, accustock, etc.
