Looking to add a .223 to the safe. Mostly for target shooting, but potentially some small game hunting.

Heavy barrel, detachable mag, .223

Narrowed it down to the Tikka or the Savage.

Opinions?

Both are good, my opinion would lean towards the Tikka. Salvage trigger is alright but not my favorite. As far as accuracy it is likely a toss up, both can be tack drivers or average, depends on the luck of the day it was built. My .02 worth.

There's definitely more aftermarket out there for a Savage ... not as much as for a Remington but far more than for the Tikka. Another consideration with the Tikka is the mags they come with, not too much room available for longer OAL hand loads.

One thing that the Tikka wins hands down is the action. Silky smooth! Also, having owned both, I'd say that the triggers are equal in terms of lightness and how crisp they break.

I've handled both (not shot them though), and the Savage felt more "solid". The stock on the Tikka felt very lightweight.

Me too.

I believe I will go with the Savage if I can find the FLCP-k in Canada as I shoot LH.
The Tikka is nice but it should be priced cheaper, just my observation.

The actions on the Tikka are slick as greased snot so no comparison for smoothness. As for play ability and modularness Savage wins. More parts, easier to switch out barrels and slightly better on the pocket book. I like both companies.

My Tikka .223 Varmint 1:8 twist is my favourite rifle. I modified the mag for shooting heavy bullets. Search "Tikka mag mod" in the precision forum for the how-to thread.

Just got my Tikka T3 Super Varmint. I haven't got it to the range yet but I love everything else about it. Can't opine on the Savage.

Tikkas have a much smoother action. I like my Tikka in .338. However, my most accurate guns are all Savage.

My 12FV in .223 is an absolute tack driver. IMO, you pay for that slick action on the Tikka, but don't get any more accuracy for you money.

Good choice.

I've owned a Tikka T3 as well as a Savage model 12. No question, I'd go with the Tikka T3 Varmint in .223 with 8" twist, if I were to choose between the two.

I too went with the Stainless Tikka T3 Varmint...223...8 twist..shoots the 69 Scenars awesomely. Got my second load partially done...80 gr A-Maxes...24.5 of Varget... 5 shots under a Tylenol @ 100 yds !!I think you'll do all right with it. :D

Nice shootin'! That's where my Varmint is happiest too, right around 24.5gr Varget.

Thankx Zimbu!...After a good talk to a few guys in the know around here...I settled on the faster twist 223. My second load data setup is from Mystic. Once I got to that magical number of Varget again, even with the heavies, the result was...one great group AGAIN!...now i'm gonna play with my OAL a little more...I tried 3 different lengths...all @ .015 in the diff....I got one that's better than the rest, so I'll experiment a bit from that point. Gawwwwd this is such a great sport and sooooo much fun !!

I just bought my third Tikka, love 'em! Quality is far ahead of savage.
I had a Savage 12, very accurate as well.
