My 8 yr old has gotten very proficiant with his single shot .22. He almost seems to be getting board with it, and naturally wants to shoot somthing bigger. The next step up for him that I already have, is a single shot .223. He isnt that big of a kid, but I dont think the .223 will be too much for him. I thought Id let him give it a try.

What do you think, good idea or keep him on the .22 for a while longer.

Just bought a savage axis in .223 for my 10 & 12 year old added a scope, bipod and rear bag they love it, my 12 year old does not enjoy recoil and loves the 223. as for my 10 year old he will shoot anything and loves recoil he thinks his next rifle should be a 338. Lol if your guy finds it too much consider a .17HMR still cheap to shoot and has a bit more bang to it

Sounds like you are raising him right! Get him that .223 and instruct him well and before you know it, he will be pushing bush for you (and costing you a fortune in guns, ammo and reloading equipment and ATV's, etc.) Remember, the difference between men and boys is the price of their toys.

.223 might be a good next step. Recoil isn't much of an issue. Don't let the louder report or the size of the shell scare him & he should be OK. Let him try a shot or two & see how it goes. If in doubt then as others have said 17HMR might be a good alternative. My son went to 17HMR before .223 and it was good because he didn't develop a flinch or any other bad habits. Now he out shoots me with 30 cal :D
Still can't swing the 12 GA like the old man though (yet)

The only problem might be the gun will not fit him properly and he might not shoot as well because of it. Make sure he has good ear protection as the noise could be perceived recoil when it is not.

If he is getting bored with a .22 try smaller targets and further distance. Reactive target seem to keep kids from getting bored too quickly. When he gets big enough, say 12 years old buy him a .223 with an extra stock. Cut one to fit him and add it back on an inch at a time as he grows. Once he is full grown put it in the extra uncut stock and it will be like a new rifle. A .223 barrel will last about 6000 rounds or more.

.223 is my favorite round... I shot the nato version in the forces and it is hellish accurate.. And no kick... Sone of the ladies I helped instruct shooting it likely weigh less than your son...lol
