223 Twist Rate

If you are going to shoot 80s, get 1:8. Usually a 1:9 is fine to 75gr. Some have reported shooting 80s from a 1:9; mine won't do it.

I shoot 80 gr SMK out of my Lothar Walther 1-8 twist barrel without any problems.
Win the lottery? A mate of mine does the same and its possibly the single reason he is still single. Financing his habit!

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to go with a 1-8 twist. Most likely will be shooting 60gr V-Max for varmints and I'll try 75gr A-Max for long range.

What about 1-12???

So... sorry to jump in here... but if you have a bolt .223 with a 1-12 twist, what is the optimum bullet weight range for that twist?

Mine has a 12" twist and seems to Favour the 40-50 grain bullets.

1:12 should be fine up to 55gr. spitzers, or blunt heavier ones. Unlikely that 62, 68, 69gr spitzers would work.

Okay, good to know, thanks. I notice that the Rem 700 V laminated in .223 has a 1-12 twist. While the Savage heavy barrel varmint rifles in .223 seem to be 1-9 [according to website info]. So, the Savage would do better with the heavier bullets, too then?

Explains why both my Rem bolts [factory twist is 1-12] in .223 are tack drivers with that cheap Winchester whitebox .223 with the 45 gr hollow-point bullets [costs about $18 for a box of 40 rounds at WalMart  ]

The rifles with quicker twists are more versatile, able to handle a wider range of bullets. Lighter bullets out of a quick twist barrel will usually shoot just fine. In theory, lighter bullets should do better out of a slower twist barrel - this is the benchrest experience - in practice, it doesn't make much difference.

Thanks for the info.... I'm going to take a serious look at the Savage heavy barrels with the 1-9 twist for my next .223 bolt rifle purchase.

Although I do see the Rem 700 P in .223 is rated with a 1-9 twist.

Quite by accident I found out that my ruger 77Mk11HBVT is a 1 in 12. I thought at first that would be a pain if I wanted to reach out to 600 and beyond. Ihave yet to kill beyond 300 but I am more than happy with sierra gamekings at 55gns. A pig to get the bullet and case to meet at times in the press but damn fine little round all the same!

My Stevens 200 is rechambered to 223 Ackley Imp and will stabilze the 75 gr A-Max withn no problem at all.

As I have been developing loads for my Tikka .223 Tactical, I have found the consistency and "tiny-ness" :) of my groups improving as I head towards the 75-80 grain bullets. Twist? 1 - 8".

I purchased a Rem 700 P in 223 this last year and installed a Bushnell Elite 4200 6X-24X A/O Mil-Dot.

The only loads I have had time to work up so far are varmint loads. I consistantly get one hole clover leaf groups @ 100 yards and have gotten 2 3/4" groups on a breezy day @ 300 yards.

I was consistantly doing head shots on gophers out too 150 yards this last summer with these loads even on windy days.

I totally recommend the Rem 700 P....
