Need Help: Talk me into .223 or .204 Ruger.

Will be used for coyotes, fox and jack rabbits.
Plenty of walking, shooting within reasonable range.
Haven't shot either round, have read plenty of info but still unfamiliar.

Concerned with the availability of ammo and the future of the cartridge.

(p.s. Already own .22-250 and .243, want another toy)

Does it really matter?

If the 204 flops, you have an excuse to buy a new rifle or embark on the exciting world of reloading. If you want to be lazy, and don't want to reload then stick with the 223.

In the end, neither round will do anything the other can't, and definetly nothing you 22-250 can't already do.

Preference is everything.

both will work well, the 223 is probably a slightly better choice for bigger coyotes at longer range (300ish yards)

I think the .204 is here to stay, seems to be gaining more and more poularity all the time. I have a remington SPS 700 Varmint in .204 ande love it, changed out the stock though. Fastest and flattest factory load there is, and very little recoil (some say you can see the bullet hit the target, I can't)

I own both, I used my 204 alot, but now I have been using my 17 remington instead of it. I like the 17 better. Just my opion.

Ive got both and the .204 wins, its pretty messy when you hit something with a 32 gr. bullet humming at over 4200 fps  Im yet to have a coyote run on me with my .204 either.
Only downside is I strickly buy factory Hornady ammo for the .204 and it costs me a $1 per round. I don't reload for the .204 cause you can't get the velocity and I like the 1/2 " groups it prints.

Cheers!!

I see quite a few fellows shooting the .204 at range, they shoot very good, at 100 y, some days we have little shoots at 300y for a loony each 5 shot group and the .204 does not do well if there is even a breeze against the .223 shooting 69gr and 75gr bullets. The problem for you its hard to find a light hunting gun made in .223 with a 1/9 or better still 1/7 twist. most are 1/12 and won't shoot the 69gr & bigger bullets.

I will take a .223 over a .204 any day

Better bullet selection and you can do anything wiht a .223 that you can do with a .204

He's already got a hi performance .22 bore (22-250) that he can use all those .224 diameter bullets in that you are shooting out of your .223. Why buy a new rifle if you're going to shoot the same pills out of the same pipe, just loaded in different cases?

I'm not maligning the .223, it just seems pointless to duplicate, nes pas?
