.223 vs .308 - General Purpose Rifle

No, no, no, NO! You all have it wrong. 20mm is the ONLY choice for any hunting; two legged or four legged. And talk about a room clearing vehicle. It just can't be beat. I just think is it time to put this 5.56/7.62 debate behind us and agree that the only REAL MAN's calibre is 20mm. I know when the SHTF that not only will I be able to deal with the sh*t but will be able to blow the f**king fan to hell too.

Krunch

The choice seemed clear until this post. I can't find a 20mm at Epps!

Anyway, thanks for the feedback. I think the best advice was 2 rifles; 30 calibre deer rifle and .223 service rifle.

Still, my chum is a physician who doesn't mind spending the money, so I'm sure he's going to get some fancy/expensive European battle rifle in .308 anyway. Suits me; we can just shoot each other's guns.

Entertaining and informative, like many threads here on CGN.

Thanks.

Ol'Blacky.

Soo true... but i like plate carriers soo much... sniff

On a side note: if you know how to shoot .223 will kill deer quite easily (but its illegal)
but will be quite ineffective on moose and elk (really thick bones)

Good to know guess it varies from province to province usually its .243 and up
. question is .22 LR legal then ? diameter maybe similar but its another story in effectiveness

.22 LR is illegal. Must be centrefire. Don't have the regs in front of me but I believe only bison have larger caliber/energy requirements.

Hopefully common sense will keep hunters from using .223 on grizzly etc. Darwin award anyone?

5 shot bursts?

I have to ask myself why everyone seems to need a semi auto hunting rifle on this site. I was under the impression that big game hunting was nothing like Doom and we try for one shot kills. I 'd rather not be in the bush amongst hunters who carry bandoleers of ammo and spray their targets.

Who said those who carry lots of extra ammo and run a semi are spray and pray shooters?

The only real advantage to an autoloading rifle is auto loading which allows faster follow up shots. They don't shoot straighter or farther. I'd make the argument that bolt actions or manual actions are a bit safer in the hands of people caught up in buck fever or those who lack experience. I've seen a few guys work a bolt pretty fast but that required thought. On a bolt action hunting rifle the benefit of a detachable box magazine is easier loading/unloading. It's not so you can have six mags in your pockets for when they come over the wire. I can't see the need for more than 10 rounds to a box of ammo on a hunt but that's just me.

I've got to agree with TDC on this one. In the EOTWAWKI or whatever catastrophic survival situation you you pick,

It's all about ammo. Lots of ammo and more than the next guy / camp / tribe / outpost when the chips are down and resupply is uncertain.

In deer season, I hunt with a .308 Savage bolt-action rifle. I load 4 rounds into the integral box, chambre one when I'm at my post, and that's it. I might have a few more rolling around in a pocket somewhere.

When I see a deer, I wait until I get a good shot. I tend to follow Jeff Cooper's 2 most important bits of advice when shooting a rifle;

1. If you can get closer, get closer.
2. If you can get more stable, get more stable.

I tend to wait until I can get a rested shot from kneeling or prone, and then take a single shot. The last 3 years in a row that has worked just fine.

But anyway, how did this turn into a thread about deer hunting?!

This does show that the answer to the question "What is the best rifle for general purpose/self defence/hunting?" is "One rifle doesn't do all of that well."

I want to see how a 5 shots bolt action can defend oneself from a bunch of fast moving coyotes that go nuts and have you encircled.

The only solution is an AR15 and take the fight to them before they start, fast triple taps.....and good transition drill! :D

But what do I know, I learn all the coyotes stories from the hunting forum!!! :p
